There will always be people that if something can be had for free, will choose that option no matter what. No DRM or DLC will chance that.

Then there will always be people that usually pay for what they use, be it out of principle, habit or stupidity.
Those are the only ones EA can really count on selling to. See the trend towards console games that then get ported to pc as compared to native pc games. It's cheaper to develop for console and it sells more, while pirating it is more difficult or impossible.

Then there are people that want to pay for things they actually like. Something that causes more trouble than enjoyment (drm...) is heavily overpriced or simply reeks of ripoff will not be bought by those people.
And those people are the ones EA and the such need to convince to buy their products by offering quality and support. That is the only group that can make a difference for the market and the big publishers still didn't get that.
Offering a short demo doesn't hurt either, since many pirate because they don't want to pay for something that is potentially crap. Again, that's the people from the last group.

Why is it that there are people saying "this isn't working" when EA adopts a policy that people were saying "was the right approach" a year ago?

Does things become "wrong" just because EA is trying to adopt it, or is it because people are just greedy clowns?

You know what they are eventually going to conclude? "Screw it. Money isn't in gaming. We'll all switch our development focuses into software development and use our talent for non-entertainment purposes, because the majority of users are no longer buying our stuff."

It's a shame software development is right where the money is for developers as well. Games are a service and PC users are especially prone to abuse that service.

Here's my off-topic spiel.  Why are you linking us to an "entire article" that's just a blurb with a link to the actual entire article?  Why not cut out the middle man entirely?

It's called desperately pimping his site.

EA's CEO wants to make more money for EA - and this does really shock your? or intrigue you?

It didn't intrigue me as this is his job description; he needs to think of (new) ways to earn money for EA. And if this means releasing DLC to do it - to reel in pirates - or to get more money from second sales of EA products, EA's CEO, will do this. No matter whether or not his name is Riccitiello.

And quite frankly, I find it very refreshing to see a CEO admitting that EA wants to make money.

I think it's stupid trying to stop piracy.

Keep trying, though. I'm sure by the time you catch these nasty pirates, your paying consumer base will still love you. Or not.

Cloud based gaming in coming years  like Onlive could chop a large proportion of piracy on the pc.
