The error says "Application Error: The instruction at "Ox4fe775be" referenced memory at "Ox16dc9420." The memory could not be "written."

What does this mean? Why is this happening? And what the crap can I do to fix it?

On a different note, my gameplay has been suffering due to lag and choppiness. I have tried turning down all the video settings, and I have even tried smaller resolutions. Nothing is helping. I thought it could be that my PC was running too many processes so I downloaded a program called "XP Smoker" and activated game mode, still this doesnt help.

Here are my comp. stats... let me know if you need to know anything else to help me out. Thanks a lot.

Windows XP
Video Card: GeForce 8800 GTS
Ram: 2 GB
Processor: AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core Processor 4200+ 2.20 GHz

Well, off the top of my head...

Do you have 2 1gig sticks of RAM or 1 2gig?

I have a 1gig stick that went flaky on my. Sometimes the computer would boot up and go through POST just fine, sometimes it would reboot up to 5 times (my mother board has "flex" memory, it tries to adapt to what ever you stick in it as long as it's DDR2)

Second thought, is your hard drive full? There is what everyone is calling a "memory leak" in the game that's really a memory overflow. The game gradually fills up all of your RAM until it runs out, then it starts using the swap space on the hard drive. If your drive is full, or near full, it would be unable to write to the pagefile.sys.

No, my hard drive is not full... not to my knowledge. Honestly, I wouldn't say that I am computer illiterate... but I don't know much. I am basically a "get on the net/play games" person.

What I am getting at is this: how do I check to see if my hard drive is full or not?

***EDIT: To answer your other questions, I am not sure if I have only 1 stick of RAM or two. How do I check?

How old is you RAM, I have encountered system crash and software crash on faulty RAMs before. You may want to try and isolate that problem.

Download Memtest 86+ and put it on a bootable CD or Floppy. Reboot PC and let that run overnight so it can get in multiple loops. Check back next day and see if there were any errors.

You can do this on your total 2GB memory. If you get errors, then remove 1 stick and re-run the diagnostic on just the 1 stick in system at a time to find the culprit. Or if you like, just discard them both (if you find errors) and buy a new set, since you don't want to mix and match.

To find out how much hard drive space you have, open Windows (or some call it file) explorer, not Internet Explorer. One way to do this is hold down the key on your keyboard that has the windows symbol and the "E" key. The explorer should open and you should see all of your folders displayed. This should include your hard drive or drives. Right click on the hard drive and a drop down menu should appear, go to the bottom and select properties. You should see a grahic that tells your how much hard drive space you have.

I will admit this next suggestions is a bit of a long shot. Go to this link http://oca.microsoft.../en/windiag.asp Please read the Users Guide, Download the diagnostic software and run the test. You will need to set up the diagnostic software on a floppy or compact disk. Any problems identified mean you have some kind of hardware failure, most likely your RAM. The User Guide has extensive notes. If no problems are identified it is very likely the problem is not hardware and likely related to a software issue.

A word of advice. If you do end up replacing your memory, don't exceed 3gigs of RAM. Windows XP (32bit) will actually run SLOWER with 4gigs or more of RAM!

I have had this error as well, with different numbers in the referenced memory. This has occurred suddenly after applying patch 1.02. My game runs extremely clean on 1.01b and I have never had a crash in this game. Now after 1.02, my game is unplayable, as I cannot even load my save games without a crash.

I reinstalled and patched to 1.01b and continued on with no difficulty. I read posts that said to underclock my vid card, run the game on only one core, etc. I would rather not patch again before tweaking my system to accomodate the new patch.

I did, however, update my Nvidia 8800 GTS driver, thinking that may help since there are so many posts in regards to a vidcard issue. I installed patch 1.02 again after the driver udate and guess what happened...crash on loading the savegame again. My laptop runs great on 1.02, but there is a conflict somewhere in my desktop with this patch, so I am off to reinstall to 1.01b again.

Bottom line is that if my game runs so smoothly on every version up to 1.01b and only crashes with 1.02, I hardly doubt that this is a RAM issue. Until something official comes out from Bioware as a fix for this, I will have to be okay with finishing this on 1.01. I have lost too many hours reinstalling this game because of a patch conflict.

That is my two cents. Have a good holiday everyone.

My specs:
Windows XP (SP3)
Intel Core 2 6600 @ 2.4ghz
2gb RAM
Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS, Driver Version 195.62

if this was vista I'd say run as admin, but as this is xp I'm going to say "make sure you're on an admin account" it might have nothing to do with the ram, Diablo 2 give me a similar error and this is the same PC I was using then, nothing's changed (other than a 8600gt as opposed to a 7100)

While that is somewhat true, the difference between 3 GBs and 4GBs is usually going to be made up for with the improved efficiency of dual-channel memory, for which only OCZ has ever offered a pair of  1 1/2  GB DIMMs.

I have stated this before, but when it comes to being technical with a computer, I am at the bottom of the hierarchy.

Having said that, how exactly do I uninstall patch 1.02 and where would I find patch 1.01b ?

That might solve one problem (the crashes obviously) but I am still at a loss for the complete choppiness and lag of the game on my system. I am seriously considering having my hard drive backed up and then reformatting the computer. Does anyone have any opinions on that idea? Do you think it is worth it? Would it work?

The only way I know to roll back the game version is to uninstall it and reinstall the whole thing.

First, check the game configuration utility that you can start from the launcher. Under game, it will tell you what the version is. If you do not have any game patches applied, it will be 1.00 and our situation differs and there will be no need to reinstall for a previous game version. Patching may help your situation if you have no patches applied. These can be obtained from the bioware site.

If you have 1.02, we have the same issue, considering your error message and mine. Mine goes away when I reinstall and omit the 1.02 patch. I am attempting to do that again now and I will report back the results.

Thanks everyone for the input.

Yeah, that is a big confirmation. I am running v 1.02. I am updating my directX because I think that might have something to do with why my game runs so choppy? maybe?

Anyways, after that I am uninstalling and reinstalling.

***EDIT: I uninstalled, reinstalled, updated my DirectX and there is no difference. Everything was laggy as Hell and then the game crashed.

Officially losing my mind.
