Wanna know the real reason there is pausing in the game?

But seriously. This thread is dumb.
Tactics are there so you don't have to pause as often. Not the other way around.

Following the OP's challenge to create a tactic that would have companions attack mages first followed by archers, I did exactly that. It took 20 minutes to clear Ostagar to the Ogre on normal. (hint: Target using attack type: magic / Target using attack type: ranged) I never switched control off of my main character. (just for kicks)
I really didn't need to do this to prove that the tactics work fine, but I did it anyway to make sure I didn't miss something. I'm inclined to say the OP simply doesn't understand conditional logic or just didn't set the tactics up in the correct order. Oh well.
I guess technically I "broke" the challenge by starting from a save in Ostagar, but I really couldn't be bothered to go through the whole origin story just to check something so silly.
I actually tried what he said too... My guys never attacked the genlock emmissary first. Instead they attacked the archers.
He's right unfortunately that if mobs trigger in sub groups it messes up the tactics for your companions.

The real reason?
So I can go and take a whiz mid battle if I need to.

Let me know when you've developed a complex AI that can run efficiently enough on today's hardware to maintain 4 instances of itself.Jensonagain wrote...

No one in their right mind would ever make an RPG game that lets you pause combat. That defeats the purpose of the battle in the first place.
As a Baldur's Gate fanatic, I cannot read further.
Man these guys have been doing this since baldurs gate, but they still can't get your companion AI to be smart? It's 2009. I mean kudos to them for making such a great game still but man..

DA is a rare game i think, the AI is more than good enough, at first i had no clue at how the tactics actually work. So one day i sat down and took my time to test and try the tactic system out. And now i don't pause the game as often as i did before. At least my tactics work perfectly to let party member prioritize certain enemy types.
It is sad to see that all these damn easy to use RPGs (Oblivion, Fable) has made gamers around the world rely lazy. It seems they all expect to be able to do anything of the go. And what is the point of having controllable party members in the game if there where an AI that could do anything.
Personally i think that would be very boring. So far this is the best RPG i have played, ever since Kotor. And i am not surprised it is a Bioware.
Btw: Guild wars was boooring! personal opinion of course.

It's great to pauze, take a breath, and see what's going on!

I was gonna reply in this thread, but then I paused and reconsidered.
Rewind would also be nice.

Yes because Elder Scrolls AI companions were geniuses... (Just on example of RPG companion AI's... I could go on)

Invest in a catheter and you'll never need to pause again!
