After starting up another playthrough, ME1 is still the best in the series

Like many people here on BSN, the ME3 ending left me disheartened with the game and series as a whole and really made me feel like the decisions I made didn't matter.  I was so disappointed with the ending that instead of playing multiple ME3 playthroughs as intended, I took a break from the ME series as a whole.

Well just under 2 weeks ago, I decided to go back to ME1 and start the series over again.  And since I've done that I have fallen in love with the ME universe all over again.  The dialogue has been wonderful, the combat refreshing (I'm playing as an Adept this time instead of Soldier/Vanguard in previous playthroughs) and even the headaches of the Mako and inventory are tolerable.  There's something about the ME1 experience that is unmatched.  The Citadel exploration, the side quest planets, the main story quests (I've only done Liara and Feros so far) are all top notch once again.

I think part of it for me is that I also have been doing this playthrough with a much more specific play style in mind.  In previous playthroughs I've followed a strictly Paragon or Renegade path for the story with little to no deviation.  This time however, I'm going through and making the choices that I would ACTUALLY make in these situations.  Additionally, I'm evaluating the decisions in the same way I did my first playthrough of ME1 with no advanced knowledge of what the impact would be in future ME games.  It's been a whole new experience.

I saved the Feros colonists and Shiala.  I saved Burns.  I saved Major Kyle.  I released Bhatia's body to her husband.  I told the arguing Petrovsky's to let Rebekah choose.  I told Conrad his plan to be a Spectre was flawed because he needed to be at home.  I convinced Garrus to try arrest Dr. Saleon to give him a better viewpoint of C-Sec. I scared off Dr. Michel's blackmailer.  I worked with Chellick.  I scanned all the Keepers for Chorban.  I killed Finch.  I sold the data that Kahoku was after to the Shadow Broker.  I killed Ethan Jeong on Feros.  I killed Dr. Ross and the other Exogeni mercs on that planet.  I told Nassana it was a pleasure working with her to kill her sister.  I plan to kill the Rachni Queen.

I love this Paragade playthrough.  I plan to follow primarily Paragon the rest of the game except for the Rachni (will save Wrex/Kirrahe/Ashley/Council) but even so, all decisions that I've made are imperfect, but the experience itself fits my Shepard so much more this time around.  Will I do a complete trilogy playthrough with this character?  Probably not (the ending is still to painful before EC is revealed) no, but I'll enjoy the content I do play up till.

Just wanted to share thoughts from a ME series lover that there is hope to love the series again, even after the damage of the ME3 ending. :)

Good to hear, I feel the same way. ME1 FTW (Prefer ME3 combat though)

I miss the Mako (just a little) and the crazy inventory (a lot!) in ME1. I've also come to feel that the combat and leveling system in ME1 was for the most part better than it was in the successive games, although that may be because I've spent waaaay more time playing ME1 than I have playing 2 or 3 -- so maybe I was just so used to it. But when they tried to improve on the combat in the following games, I feel like they made some minor improvements and at the same time took away the things that didn't need improving imo.

Anyway, yeah - as old as it is, ME1 will always be the best for me. I always have a career (or 3) in progress in ME1. I may not touch it/them for months at a time, but every time I do, especially lately (esPESHially since I've played ME3), I appreciate it that much more. I've also come to appreciate ME2 a lot more since ME3 came out, even though I haven't picked it up in awhile. I do want to start carrying over more ME1 careers at some point.

I feel like the sheer exploration of the mako something special that never came back in the series. It's like I'm fulfilling a childhood fantasy of exploring vast uncharted worlds that the other games just never recaptured. ME1 for life.

It's really true.  Exploring in the Mako really does show the vastness of the ME universe in a way the other games never captured.

And for all the griping about how it handled terrain, I've done all the sidequests (except the Rachni planets that open up after Noveria) and only found 2 or 3 planets that presented any sort of challenge.

I loved ME1....but using that damn Mako just utterly ruined the experience for me. I've played through it three times, and each time it was only the strength of the rest of the game that got me through what sometimes felt like nails on a chalkboard....
