I am sure there are a bajillion threads on this already, but I do not see a search function so...

How the heck can I bust the glass open on the damn mech?  I have never had it happen, despite beating the game twice, once on Insanity.

Best class to use?
best weapon to use?
best squadmates to use?
best stage to get it to happen?
best strategy to get this to occur?

And after busting the glass open - do I need to then shoot the guy inside or does he die automatically?  And, after all that, do I have to actually run over and hop in the mech?  Can I hop in the mech after everything is dead or does it have to be during battle?

Thanks,
Eric

The guy doesn't necessarily die when your Shepard breaks the glass. If he hasn't died, yes. Your Shepard will have to shoot him specifically. One shot has done it for me.

I've only had this happen randomly with various weapons. I've never had it happen until the shields were complete down and the armor was also taken down significantly but not completely gone. Be aware that you can continue to damage the Atlas and destroy it even after you break the glass. So beyond having to kill the guy if he's still alive, that's is all I know.

This is more difficult to get with higher level characters with high level weapons. The other issue is that you do not want to be using weapons with cover penetration, either from the Piercing mods, AP ammo, or those with innate cover penetration (Widow variants, Javelin, Crusader) as they can damage the glass and the Atlas at the same time.

The other issue is that if your squad is shooting or using powers against it, they will be doing damage to the Atlas as a whole and you are more likely for it to simply blow up. So you don't really want squad mates at all.

Basically to get the achievement I used the Predator so that I could make sure to only hit the glass and not "overpenetrate." Also if I had errant shots onto the body of the Atlas it would not cause as much damage as the Black Widow.

I had one time where I did break the glass with the BW, but my shot into the head of the pilot also blew up the Atlas :)

Oh and one final bit. If you kill the pilot it is possible that other Cerberus troops will jump into it. you have been warned.

The best class is either the soldier(offensive adrenaline rush) or Inflitrator(tactical boost).
Best weapon is definitely the widows with time dilation mod.
Don't use squad mates at all because you just want to break the glass.
Best stage is wherever you fight an Atlas :)

Best strategy is to make sure you use your boost power and focus ALL your shots at the glass.

Almost forgot: make sure you equip the scope mod as well in order to see through the smoke.

I hijacked an atlas a while ago. It was great fun! I had to turn off my squad's power usage to get the achievement though. :D

That makes a huge difference.  I constantly redirected squadmates to attack other targets so I could concentrate on cracking the glass with my Black Widow.  If you let them attack the Atlass with you, the whole thing will just blow up.

Lol. Speaking of the Maker, I really need to start playing Dragon Age II again. It has been collecting dust since I bought it.

Erm, ... Grissom Academy practically gives you that achievement on a silver plate. Why are people having problems getting it?

Not always, I didn't get the achievement for jacking the empty Atlas.

I ended up using the Disciple I had equipped against the final Atlas on Grissom.

I didn't either, that's why I asked. I had to actually shoot the pilot out of the Atlas to get the achievement.

I had to go out of my way for this one too. What eventually worked for me was parking Javik and Garrus around a corner in one of those back rooms during the coup where they couldn't even see the action, much less shoot the mech. I then went after the Atlas with a scoped Carnifex. Oddly, killing the pilot was the hardest part. Dude kept twitching out of the way or something and I finally gave up on headshots and wasted the bullets on his torso.

Presumably because you don't get the achievement by simply jumping into the standing Atlas. At least, you don't always get it. As I understand it, the achievement is only up for grabs by getting rid of the pilot and then jacking it. You don't seem to get any hijack credit just by jumping into the empty Atlas.

Grissom is the easiest place to bag an Atlas, just because of the number of them around, though the one in the Javik DLC is doable too. NG+ I find the things explode long before the glass breaks, so now I don't bother trying it.

Strange, I thought the empty Atlas would give credit.

Anyway, I got the achievement on the very first one that showed up in the very first game I played. Shattered the glass, killed the pilot, sprinted up to use it as cover from the other Cerberus troops, and discovered it could be used. Hit spacebar, and got the achievement.

Thanks for the help. On Eden Prime I sent my squadmates off to keep the small guys busy and used my Mantis to blow open the glass. I even had to snipe a guy as he was trying to climb into the damned thing, lol.

All achievements completed.

Thanks again,
Eric

You don't get the hijack achievement for simply getting into a parked Atlas. It has to be one that is piloted with unbroken glass to start with. At least that is how it is on PC.

And as I already made a post above, I will just reiterate that taking a cover penetrating weapon like a Widow or Black Widow against it is not the best way to do it.
