The thing is that not only did you "sacrifice the council" there was a crew of 10,000 on the Destiny Ascension that also perished. Saving the DA does gain you some good will among the rest of the aliens. However, the way BW handles the DA it is essentially the
Edsel of space ships You did lose ships, but after you saved the DA, it should have regained its shields and joined in the battle against Sovereign, maybe getting the final shot instead of the Normandy making your decision to save it matter, but our choices matter. All you humans are racist.
You should make Anderson councilor if you don't save the Destiny Ascension. If you save it, it doesn't matter who you make councilor.
And in ME3, nothing really matters except the EMS number. It needs to be above 3100 which means your war assets need to be above 6200, but that doesn't really matter anyway since ... oh I'll shut up now.
