Speaking of awkward and embarrassing, is anyone else shipping Greagoir/Irving?

I thought that was just me! After years in X-Men fandom, I am all about the forbidden old man love :).  There should definately be Greagoir/Irving fic.

The detaield aticels on Sues. Note that begin good os "special2 doesnt' necessarily make one a Sue (altough it does alread veer into dangerous territory). It's more like how everything and anything centers around that character.

Forbidden old man love? That has me thinking about a storyline involving Duncan... Hmmm...

As someone who created a website solely for KoTOR fan stuff, I most certainly believe that it is a good thing. If something inspires you so much to write about it, how can that be bad?

I've started a Very Secret Diaries thingie and have posted it in the Campaign forums. As it has not been deleted yet, and has been posted in by a Biowarian, I suppose it's all right. I also put them in my blogs just in case.

I suppose someone could start a group for DA:O Fanfiction, and use the discussion boards to post bits in, as well.

there's also a poet-tree (heh heh, get it?) thread lurking about somewhere, if that's your thing.

there are a couple of groups on here, but i haven't found a definitive one yet. If i can recover my crashed hard drive, i should soon be posting some teagan fic on my blog, for lack of a better place. Fanfiction.net is OK, but you do have to wade through a lot of bad to find the good.

I look at it this way: If i'm going to write the great american novel someday (well, it would probably actually be fantasy, but whatever), why not practice writing short fiction in an already-created universe? As long a credit is given where it is due (god bless you, David Gaider and friends, you are awesome), it is as legitimate an outlet for creativity as splashing paint on a canvas.

and Adria's website was a great place back in the heady days of KOTOR fanfic. there were some amazing stories out there. Mine were out there, but were hardly amazing ;)

so....

if you're so embarassed to be writing fan-fic, why do you want to post it where other people can read it????!?

hmm!

i started writing some, but mine is just called 'conversations that never happened,' because its me going through the story in my head and filling in some stuff they didnt program in there. ::shrug:: first i just did it in my head, but it started going so nice, i thought i'd write it down. oh, and i posted it in a writing forum my friend runs where no one goes to read anything. :X

anyway, i dont think fan fiction is bad/evil/terrible. then again... i guess i don't really read a lot of it. though the gargoyles fan site had a really great and long continuation of the story after it got cancelled.

don't be embarassed about being a writer. so what if you 'steal' ideas/characters/settings from some other story instead of making up something entirely new? it's just for fun anyway!

Making a simple website solely intended for DAO fanfics ( and fanart ) is a simple enough of a matter. I find it could be accomplished by simply using forum software ( personally I'd even prefer the approach, always found Mediaminer and ff.net clumsy ).

However that would require someone who's willing to go through the effort, possibly pay the money for the webspace, knows anything about websites forum softwares, and who actually would have the patience to keep the place running. Not to mention having at least some notion of quality control. Heck, I might even keep my eyes on a place like that for a time.

Anyone up for the job?

That would be really awesome if someone took that initiative. I ran a website a few years back but it was much too time consuming since I was a beginner and having to learn everything.

I was also thinking about a possible side forum for some story based RPing. I used to be heavy into that and I miss it terribly.

I just wanted to say thank you to all your very sweet replies. I was convinced that I would be bombarded with rotten forumfruit.

A couple of people are wondering why I would be a bit embarrassed about the topic.

Firstly, I was a bit clueless as to what the general feeling about fanfiction was. I think I probably view it with some suspicion, it has the potential to be very twee and gushy, a bit like 13 year olds writing stories about their favourite boy band (been there, done that. Prooobably don't want to go there again. Long time ago. *shudders*)

Secondly, it would be MORTIFYING to post a story, only to discover that I'd written something very, very bad. It's a quality issue. Up until recently, I'd never shown any of my dabblings in fiction to anyone. I'm still not sure if it's any good. But the only way to find out is for other buggers to be able to see the damn stuff, isn't it.  I would like to improve and hone my fiction writing.  And I would like feed back.

For reasons best known itself, the pregnant, stray cat of my writing ability has chosen to have it's scraggly fiction kittens in this particular warm cupboard of the interwebs. No idea why. Except I suppose that the fiendish David Gaider has made me fall in crush with a pretend assassin-type person, which is not only frustrating but a little disturbing too.    So, perhaps I'm trying to sort out that little conundrum by writing about him.  Zevran.. not David Gaider.  I'll leave the poor man alone.

Anyway, you are a very sweet collection of people and you've given me warm fuzzies. Aw.

Anyone like a beta reader job? PM me if you wouldn't mind. :)

Actually, realize that the Blog space given to you here is obviously the right place to put things, so I'll probably do that.

I also put out the call again for a kind proof reader/editor/critic if someone doesn't mind and if that's not too demanding x)

It's verra easy to set up, but don't be surprised when/if it balloons out of control, bandwidth requirements explode, and you have tens of stories to review every day.  It can get out of control very quickly.

I'd recommend a committee approach from the start.  People willing to read the stories, monitor guestbooks/forums, and update the site with new submissions.  It is simply too much for one person.

Where you think the story should go isn't fan fiction.

Fan fiction is a story inside a universe. Some are pretty graphic and should be destroyed. Others are epic pieces of storytelling on their own. Usually it breaks the canon and goes on its own. It's just a story, not an opinion.

Also good luck with it. Too little great fanfiction these days. Just smutty ones...

I'm sorry I just had to say your avatar looks like a drunk and a womaniser.

"What a night!" I though, as I lowered the basket of fine Orlesian ointments into the hand-dug well.
"Why are you doing this," I heard the faint voice shout from the darkness below. "Please let me out!"
"It puts the lotion on its skin!" I shouted, "or else it gets the hose again!"

That Leliana always was a whiner. =]

Oh me likes to write ^^ It´s not that I excel in that but I really like writing stories playing in my fandoms. I like to indulge further in them without to fangirl to much. Keeping them in character is my rule number 1...nothing kills a story more than OOC-ness.

Also dragon age imo leaves really much space for developing stories of your own, which is why there are already (almost) 300 at FF.net after only one month. And reading them is not that bad or awkward either...there are a fair amount of really great stories out there. You just have to sharpen up your senses to be able to distinguish the good from the badfiction when you click at the certain story. Also staying away from certain fandoms like twilight etc (which is a giant badfiction of its own already...yuck )  helps much as well. ^^

I for myself are currently writing on some DA:O FF´s. Nothing special, but I really enjoy the process of writing itself; like creating a plot and dialogs. (Oh, nothing beats dialogs if it has Alistair and Morrigan with in it...it´s such a blast to write their banters  Like that one of my (not yet released) FF:

Alistair: "Ugh. Morrigan, it´s you. Why don´t you do the favor and die? It´s not too late for that, you know?"

Morrigan: "Nope, can´t do that. I want to survive the blight just to be able to see how Ferelden is going down in the hands of it´s new idiot-king. Gonna be fun."

Alistair: "Oh, you hurt my feelings. Not. Envious much? Last time I checked crazy witches from the wild couldn´t volunteer for such a position. Anora aside, of course."

I am surprised that there aren't dedicated DA FF sites. I have been active on other ff sites and find that those dedicated to a single theme/fandom work much better than places like ff.net. Some of the Tolkien ff sites require that your work meet certain standards before they will publish it. While I encourage kids to write, some of the teenage Mary Sues are a bit much.

So--does such a site exist?

Well, the nice Bioware chaps set up the Community Creations forum here and that sees a lot of traffic - fics, art etc.  It's always got new and interesting things happening.  Oddly though, they haven't done the same for Mass Effect.  I'd quite like to see them take the Community Creations forum out of the DA section and make it open to all BSN.
