I don't  understand why BioWare even bothered with the names to begin with.. there is no plot, no story, no conversation or interaction of any kind, hell, other players can't even bloody see my characters name! all we see is the player name.
I know i speak for most players when i say that naming is mostly just a minor 2 seconds hassle - you randomly press the first 3 buttons your fingers get a hold of and move on.

I have a degree in classical history, so all of mine are named after Roman gods, generals, and other influential figures. (Making this the first time that degree has come in handy since I received it.)

...except my Human Soldier, Hubert. He knows what he did and why he was stripped of his original name. He knows.

I name my batarian after batarians mentioned on the wiki and in the codex,

My solider is named solem and my sentinel is named essul.

I name them according to when I created them, in what order.
For example, the first multiplayer character I made was named '1'. The second was named, '2'. And so on goes the chain...

Those are the ones I use over and over, because they are the characters I play most often. If it's any other race I just pick a random name on the spot.

All of my characters are named after a certain feature unique to males. On my first promotion, when I realized that the names were invisible, I did it as a lark.
After each one of the 20+ characters I've promoted and named, I've produced a different metaphor or euphemism. To no one's greater surprise than mine, the joke has yet to become old.

Agree - I get so irritated when they insist on "confirming a name".  Why?  It's totally pointless. 

The quickest way I do it is just initials - Asari Adept is AA, etc.
