Vanguard Extra Ability

 So I just imporrted my Vanguard femshep from ME2 for an Insanity playthrough.  What is the optimal extra ability I should choose?  I read Reave, but I cannot choose that for some reason as it isn't on the list.  Basically any abilities that require the DLC I dont have access to.

Any suggestions?

Reave is unlocked via getting to best buds with Kaidan. If he's not survived any of your runs, you're out of luck unless you do a full ME1 and 2 run with him living.

He's alive.  So do I unlock it later in the game?  Or if it isn't available from the start, I don't have it at all?

Unlocked after you have a chat with him on the Normandy post-coup. So for your first run with Kaidan alive, not until quite some way into the game.

Energy Drain
Barrier, Defense Matrix, or Fortification

I usually go with Energy Drain myself, but kronner's defense stack with the Vanguards natural Biotic Charge 50% DR works well too.

Reave for obvious reasons, or Dark Channel to set off detonations back to back.

I started a default Shepard to unlock Marksman and Inferno Grenade. I had both by the Cerberus Scientists mission. It takes less than three or four hours on Narrative difficulty.

Horrible yes, but efficient if your only goal is to unlock Kaidan's bouns powers.

 I'd take one of the three shield powers.  There's a thread about it somewhere, but basically biotic charge seems to have an undocumented 50% DR buff for like 4 seconds after a charge, which goes up to 80% with a shield power.  You're practically unkillable once you've got it all going.  My Vanguard is plowing through Insanity, and I haven't used Nova once.  I use incendiary ammo with a Scimitar to maximize the amount of incendiary burst I get.  It's a lot of fun, being all chargin and shotgunning, and feels much closer to how Vanguard was in ME2.

Or you can start a new ME3 game (no import) and chose Ashley as dead the in CC background (Me3 lets you make that choice when you start the game). I had the opposite of you, I had Ashley dead and this is what I did to get Ashley's bonus powers.


Anyways, I liked Defense Matrix because I can restore my sheilds automatically when they go down or when I use Nova.

I personally loved Carnage on my Vanguard. Deals a truckton of damage (With Blood Dragon Armour, Modkits from scanning and various perks towards power damage I believe mine does 743 damage on a 2.54 second recharge) and triggers fire explosions like no ones business.

Along with the fact that charging someone, shotting them and then blowing them to bits with carnage just feels so ME1-eqse.

Barrier works well, especially with a light loadout. It's optimal for Nova spam, but can make your Charges lethal by themselves.

Slam's the best because you can set it up for the radius upgrade and use it with Pull upgraded for double pull and radius. You can explode 4 or 5 people at once if you set it up right, then Nova them as they try to get up, then charge one of the stragglers to get some shield back.

I like barrier it works quite well, I specced for Damage Resistance, Power Damage, and Recharge. Combined with my armor set I have negated barrier's cooldown penalty completely and more power damage definitely helps. Also, I almost never detonate barrier it seems pointless to do so.

Barrier and Reave would be my top picks. Barrier because it grants you extra survivability and punch to your Charge and Nova, and Reave also for extra survivabililty and the ability to trigger biotic explosions even on foes that are too big to be affected by Pull.

I went with Carnage to deal with armoured targets, but thought about Barrier too. Makes sense for my canon Vanguard, since he had Barrier in ME2 as well.

I went with the little defence drone. Everytime I charge he's right behind me, zaping the enimies who try to run up and melee me. Plus I like watching him float around my Shepard's head. Posted Image

Reave is an amazing ability but the only problem is its tied with kaidan but you can use the save editor to add the skill on Shepard or Replace Ash with Kaidan(via save editor). or bite the bullet and a new game with kaidan alive and unlock reave either way reave and barrier are amazing skills to have on your vanguard.

Slam was pretty baller for me. On Hardcore it was one-shotting Cannibals w/out biotic explosions or anything.

No such thing as a poor choice.

Energy Drain is the one I use. A good defensive ability that restores your barrier/shields.

Barrier is also good (you can detonate it whilst keeping your barrier up. So arguably better than nova).

Carnage: Because it's fun. Won't be any good against shields and barriers.

Reave: Biotic explosions and hardening.

Stasis: Biotic explosions and keeping enemies in place. Useful against phantoms.

Defence Drone: It's a drone that can paralyze the enemies.

Decoy: When you need a distraction.

Warp Ammo: Good synergy with biotic powers.



But my highest recommend is Dominate. WHY DON'T WE HAVE DOMINATE??? It was awesome in ME 2. Why isn't it in ME 3?
