What's Pilotwings?

And let's add X-Wing and the first Gabriel Knight game. Of course, that last one is one of the games from this era that's supposed to be the problem, isn't it?

I have no clue what Gabriel Knight is. But considering how noone talks about them anymore, it was one of those things which was impressive back then, but then went out of fashion.

People talk about Pilotwings? And Super Mario Kart? I actually heard about Gabriel Knight just a few days ago, now that Jane Jensen's got a new studio.

Of course, as a PC gamer, it's not surprising that I've barely heard of most of the games you mentioned. I can barely stand consoles now, and I found them completely worthless in that era.

Has there ever been a Bioware RPG where you could get ahead solely through talking? Even the earlier D&D games, at least iirc required you to kill endless monsters to get ahead, whereas in contemporary games like Planescape or Arcanum you could resolve conflicts non violently to a large extent
