Why are so many of you here scared to say that you wanted a happy ending?

But when cross-eyed Harby fried Shep, and he was barely alive limping to the stupid beam i was like "Yep, Shep is going to die". But i sure as hell wasn't expecting this nihilistic nonsense of an ending,

I would have prefered to have the possibility of a happy ending, but that's not even comparable to my desire for all the endings to make chuffing sense.

Destroy with 5.000 EMS is happy enough if you ask me (if you really, really want Shepard to live) but wanting the Reapers destroyed, the Relays intact and everyone dancing in the beach IMHO would really cheapen a story about a galactic war with people sacrificing many things, including their very lives, to reach victory.

I'm choosing to believe they fixed up the Normandy and were back in time for supper. :3

Mass Effect is not the f***ing nightly news. If one thinks all entertainment has to be grim and dark, all in the interests of "edginess and realism", there are plenty of indie film channels on satellite television for those kind of tastes. Mass Effect usually has a little something for everybody.

I did want to have a happy ending.
Not MLP style happy, but essentially just a subtle and relieved ending, where everyone got through intact.
Like you know, imagine Shepard walking on the beach in Rio, still in his wrecked armor with a pistol held loosely in his hand, he steps into the ruins of a bar, with the counter miraculously intact, to sit down with his squad and have a goddamn drink.

Honestly I find that whole argument to be so silly. It's like people think Mass Effect has some sort of deep, ultra mature story in the first place. It's silly over the top space opera and has been from the first game onward, laden with fan service and wish fulfillment.
In fact, part of the reason these endings fail so hard is that Bioware seem to have confused themselves into thinking their game is not silly over the top space opera.
Heck, it's not even Metal Gear Solid (which is unbelievably silly but not only recognizes that, it revels in it) which was wearing it's 'I AM PHILOSOPHICAL' badge from game one.

You can't get that playing single player only.
I would have liked one of the endings to be happy, at least for my paragon Fem Shep.

A Disney like ending would have probably involved singing and everyone living to see their home worlds again but at least it would have made SENSE.

I would have liked to have a "happy ending", if the player managed to get an extremely high EMS score and did everything correctly throughout the course of the trilogy. I see it as not so much a cop-out, but a recognition of player skill and effort for being there every step of the way throughout Shepard's story.
But, you can make lots of terrible decisions or never play the whole triology and still get a very high EMS score by just playing lots of multiplayer..
I wouldn't begrudge other players a happy ending, I just don't get having 1 good ending along with 3 possible bad endings.
Use IT though and give us a real ending instead where Shepard lives and everything makes sense.

Since I'm not some emo arm cutter or some goth weirdo, I have no problem with a happy ending option. A lot has already been lost, and this is fiction. In fiction, anything goes. Including a small group of heroes beating overwhelming odds for a bright dose of triumph.

Also, the "Shepard lives" ending means nothing unless it is expanded upon. At present it is nothing more than an Easter egg.

Right now I have one via high EMS and my head canon. I also got one via the Epilogue Slides site (see the post on this board, if you haven't tried it it is really fantastic).
If the EC destroys my head canon happy ending, I'll delete it from my hd and go back to my head canon.
No dancing, my Shep lives and the Reapers are destroyed. No dancing because this victory came (supposedly at the Geth and EDI's life, but I think the brat was lying as my Shep lived and he heavily hinted that Shep would die and he didn't) I can create many ways for Shep to reunite with LI and crew.

How about several good endings and several bad endings, depending on how you played Shepard?
DAO did that very well. In fact, two people could see the same ending and depending on how they played their Warden that ending could be viewed a happy or sad.
