Why does DA:O and Awakening still require a disk in order to play, when the newer game, DA2 does not?

Because of the copy-protection mechanism on the older games.

Does the copy protection go on forever? After playing Origins and Awakening many times my disks are getting old and somewhat scratched. Maybe EA is hoping we will have to buy new games if we still want to  play them, but I just couldn't go through the whole mess of downloading all the patches and add-ons again, so I guess I'm just SOL!

If your discs get damaged, you can use the CD Key that came with them to download the game through the EA Origin
service at no additional charge.  Doing so usually requires you to completely uninstall the game first.  See the FAQ for more.

I've had the same UE disc in my drive for almost a year now.  (Yes, I have a dual optical-drive rig.)
It's only accessed when starting the game, and hasn't had any problems.  Plus, if it ever does, the "other" disc (DA:O, or DA:A, which ever isn't the primary) can be used to start the game.
(Or if you're really worried about it, do what RaenImrahl suggests and get the 100% digital version. Posted Image )

Also, just FYI... the devs have mentioned in the past that there are "sunset" plans for all of Bioware's titles; this likely would not happen for many, many years-- some day, perhaps (and this is just my speculation) when EA no longer wants to devote server resources to doing DRM checks on old titles.

See http://social.biowar...ex/5887403&lf=8 for more.

So does that mean that DA3 might not have copy protection? That would be cool.
Thanks for your response, the link was very helpful.

I'm currently going through the process of replacing a lost DA:A disk with the "digital download" like RaenImrahl mentioned. I would *not* describe the process as either "smooth" or "easy". In hind sight, it would have been much easier to just buy another copy off ebay for < $20 (US), even though I have major objections to doing that.

Just my 2 cents...
