ME1 was the best, easily. Felt so much bigger, and then in ME2 and ME3 something about it felt off...like you weren't even on the Citadel anymore.Elk Cloner wrote...
ME1. It was the pinnacle of the series. And you could gamble.

ME3>ME2>ME1
Atmosphere and ambiance trumps size anyday. The ME1 Citadel was way too empty for something that has millions of people on it. As I recall, the Citadel is supposed to be like a densely populated city, and yet there really aren't many people to be seen. ME1 was the worst about this, since not only were there few people, they did almost nothing. Maybe they walked in preset paths that became obvious almost immediately, but that's it really. In ME2 and 3, the people are more lively. They have conversations and arguments, and help make the place seem like an actual place instead of a cardboard cut-out. ME3 took the improved atmosphere from 2 and the size from 1 and compromised between them.
This captures my opinion quite nicely.

Mass Effect 1 for sure, I liked that everything was connected, I could walk around the whole thing without ever seeing a loadscreen. And I liked the elevators, I don't know why someone would prefer an immersion breaking loadscreen to a elevator ride.
The elevator rides were technically the load screens. But they were well done so it almost wasn't noticed.
I remember people complaining about the elevators back when ME 1 was the only ME game and now people want them back?
That's simply inevitable when different people want different things. I didn't have any problem with the elevators.

Mass Effect 1. I liked being able to walk everywhere if you chose to.
I also enjoyed those lift/loading screens and the occasional squad member banter in them ....and the news reports you'd get that referenced your previous missions.
^ This - loved the size and scope of the Citadel in ME1 - and I guess I am among one of the few who loved those elevator "loading" scenes with squad banter and news reports.
I loved them too. I never took a taxi from one citadel location to another, prefering to run from place to place and listen to the elevator chat/news.

I loved them, personally. I was surprised when I joined the online community and learnt that people disliked them (along with the Mako). That's simply inevitable when different people want different things. I didn't have any problem with the elevators.

Still prefer how the entire thing is connected. Sure it involves sitting through boring elevator rides but at least it feels like one whole place. And an elevator ride with squadmates/newscasts is helluva lot more interesting then a loading screen. Also people seem to forget that there were literally "fast transit" vehicles everywehre in the ME1 Citadel you could use to skip the boring elevators.
I actually probably would have enjoyed ME3's Citadel more if not for the fact everytime I got into the Elevator I got stuck with the same boring loading screen again and again and again and again...

Well like I said I didn't mind it either way. I didn't mind them in ME 1 but I didn't miss them in the sequels. Though the Normandy elevator in ME 1 was kind of a pain.

Yep in that instance I'm okay with loading screens. Though stairs or ladders would be preferable to both. Not really sure why the Normandy isn't just one environment. At least on the SR1 you could actually go to to the crew deck without an elevator ride.

The elevators on the citadel never bugged me. I usually took the long way instead of rapid transit so I could hear news reports or crewmate banter in the elevators.
Now, the elevator on the Normany 1, THAT thing was annoying.

It was huge in ME1, but most of your time aboard the Citadel in ME1 was spent running around in empty hallways or aboard elevators. It also hard to top the ambient dialogue in ME3's version of the Citadel.

ME1. ME3 if I had Jack and Legion rolling around with me. ME3's is actually pretty good concerning banner, but it feels really small, compared to ME1. Plus, I still can't get over Bailey (sp?) and Udina's hair change, rofl.
Youve never changed your hair over the course of 6 months?

It's the fact that they look way more younger in the course of 6 months. Maybe it's some futuristic therapy treatment that was never mentioned that just made me go "huh?"
And yes, I've gone through many, lol.

ME1...still pristine. The pinnacle of galactic co-operation and peace. It was open and expansive and full of possibilites and harmony... not yet touched by an impending storm.
ME2...tarnished somewhat and still recovering from death and destruction...it's inhabitants less trustful of one another. A little on edge, a little more corrupt. The message of Shep's warning heard but unheeded.
ME3...The sh*t storm has arrived. The Citadel is full of fear, angst, uncertainty and an overall sense of impending doom. Long gone now, it seems, are the relaxed days of prosperity and harmony and it's more and more confined as the refugees arrive.
All these "atmospheres" are presented quite well in my opinion for each game. My fave though is ME1...loved the exploration and expanse we were able to transverse. The banter of your squad mates was great. ( I alway got acharge out Ashely asking " Are those cherry trees?" or "I wonder how many people have drowned in that lake"
And the various music tracks playing while exploring the Citadel in ME1...outstanding!
