Yes. It wasn't an argument, just a caveat.

I found cover to be my first and foremost line of defence in Mass Effect 1 on normal with an infiltrator. Infi is a bit bad at start, since Shepard cant keep the weapon steady at all at that point, but later on, with a better sniper rifle and the right mods, it shoots anything down with just one shot, the sole exception being a Geth Prime. Those guys can take a beating, I'll tell you that.

Also, in ME1 you actually can and should retreat and leave and things just dont seem to die. Trying to get Wrex's family armor at lvl 8 from Tonn Actus is one of those parts, since his base is one of the toughest places to clear in the whole game. Running after him in that complex of crates with a infiltrator isnt nice.

I recognise you cant back out in the Liara recruitment mission, but that mission is something I've done after every sidemission I can find, if possible and not playing a soldier. In the last fight, it's good to have Wrex and Garrus with you, since they can dish out a fair amount of damage in a short time. Gunning or bioticing down the Geth is your number one priority, since the Battlemaster always moves to the side of the arena first, so he wont be a problem for some seconds, and the geth sniper and rocketeer really hurt in such small spaces.

The Battlemaster himself is tough, but can be killed by utilizing sprint as much as you can to stay away from him and try to keep your squad between yourself and him. Cover in this fight is useless; you wont have time to shoot him down before he flanks your cover unless you're way overleveled. If you're an engineer, overheating his weapon is a good idea when you can, since it's what you mainly get damage from. His charge is a killer, but can be easily dodged with the aforementioned sprint.

But even with all precautions taken, he can still kill you fairly easily, especially if you lose sight of him. I've done that mistake a couple of time, and have, in every single case, lost my life due to the Sneaky-Krogan-From-Behind-Syndrome.

Some tips from someone with a good amount of ME1 experience. I am going to assume your doing the fight on Hardcore or Insanity if not still the same applies. First off do not do the Therum mission till you've done a decent amount of side quests. In ME1 as with ME 2 and 3 there's no need to rush to get characters as all characters are Shepard's level and you cannot have character A out level character B.

So hold off on Therum and do some side missions, also when you fight the Krogan draw him to the far side of the room away from the sniper, the other Geth have a bad habit of running up on you one by one and usually getting a pistol round right in the mouth. Immediately double back and kill the sniper since he god mods and seems to fire through walls. After that the Krogan is by himself. Use your squadmates as decoys and cats paws and spam the **** out of Unity if you can. Also skirmish the Krogan keep him on the other side of the room from you and keep hitting him till he falls. Be mindful that he regenerates and you should be golden.

Just started my first playthrough on Hardcore and died a few times fairly early in the game. Mostly due to my own error in charging ahead and not being able to utilise cover well enough. Also had to do a lot of attacking and then running away early on too, lol. Especially during the mission to retrieve Wrex's armour (I did it at a very early level (had only rescued Liara at that point) and I had only had one conversation with Wrex at the point.)

Another was a mission with a crapload of Assault and Rocket Drones. My main strategy became to find a choke point and just shoot from a distance. Eventually they have become much less of an issue though. High level + soldier (immunity + assault rifle) usually makes things a walk in the park. Especially with Tali around.
