Darren Aronofsky is the best man for this job.

Alfonso Cuarón, the director of Children of Men.
CoM shows that he can do intelligent Sci-Fi while at the same time he made the battles actually feel like you were in a battle.

I'm not sure audiences will want to see a Mass Effect movie with how people reacted to the end of the Shepard's story . . .
Doesn't matter much, if they want to do an epic cinematografic saga, they mustn't aim for the fans (who would never be satisfied, and probably with a good reason), but for the general audience who have no idea on how the games ended (well, the movies would probably end in a different way anyway).

My point is that the brand is damaged, they need to stop the bleeding before they make it run track.

Isn't it obvious?
Quentin Tarentino.
If he is not available I'll settle for David Lynch.

Also:
James Cameron
Steven Spielberg
Ridley Scott
John Carpenter
Joss Whedon
It has to be someone who can strike the right balance between character interaction, suspense and cinematics.

I believe there was a poll some time ago with a pretty vast set of choices. Joss Whedon and JJ Abrams came ahead, for good reason I'd say.

I'd grant it the director it deserves, namely McGee

I lol'd.
James Cameron, for me he's probably one of the few people who could actually pull it off - unfortunate he never will.

As someone else mentioned, the guy who did Hellboy and Pans Labrynth would make sense.
I have to say I'm surprised to see hardcore ME fans recommending **** hollywood directors that will just turn mass effect into another transformers

Do we want a "summer blockbuster" or a film that is actually good?

I personally feel it is unlikely to be pulled off well by anyone without a large budget and good character and action focus.

I have now expanded my list to include Andrzej Bartkowiak making:
-Uwe Bolle
-Andrzej Bartkowiak (He directed Doom)
Either of these two directors could work well with what we have now.

Agree with OP. I got interested in Buffy and Angel just before I saw The Avengers, and I'm checking out Serenity right now. Joss Whedon has done a lot of great work.
