This will be the ultimate topic regarding the origin of the Reapers!
So I'm wondering, someone made the Reapers ofc, and a lot have told some amazing idea's, but now that ME3 is out I had something:
In the codex it told that Harbinger was the ''Oldest'' Reaper arround, so he must be the first ever Reaper and all others bases of him.
Well thats it, let the brain storming begin!
(Spoilers are not allowed. So explain it in a good and understanding way without spoiling other players)

I surmise that millions of years ago there was an advanced civilization of beings who looked similar to cephalopods (octupus & squid) who created smart self sufficient self repairing spaceships that became too smart and took over or absorbed the original creators and the reason for destroying galactic civilizations could be either self preservation (the idea that they would become to powerful and a threat) or a built in need to harvest more beings for their continued existence. It is explained at some point that the Reapers have the idea that when a civilization advances to a certain point it will create artificial intelligences (like the geth) who inevitably (from the Reapers point of view) will destroy all organic life so they come and wipe out said civilizations to prevent this and this could be because they have a need for organic life to perpetuate. Of course the creators of the game likely got the idea for the Reapers from the Cthulhu Mythos given their design and how they slumber beyond the edge of the galaxy for thousands of years waiting to return and destroy
