Holy hell, now thats how you end a series.
1) Damn near 30 minute long ending sequence to wrap things up {EDIT} Over an hour long cutscene
2) Each character gets their own finale
3) Final boss battle that was possibly the greatest  boss battle I've ever participated in

I love ME3, but damn, MGS4 really figured out how to end a characters story.,

It was damn amazing, wasn't it?

When MGS was fresh a majority of people proclaimed it the greatest story ever, now in hindsight its laughed at for its ridiculous story and insane plot. I wonder how ME will be looked upon a decade from now?

Are you people serious, I mean sure ME 3's ending is a disappointment but MSG4 is just about one of the most retarded games ever - and i use the term "game" loosely since you cant really call something that consist of over 50% cut scenes a game, Hell sometimes i even get the feeling that my PS 3resents me for being in the same as it when it's playing this game for it self..it's like MSG4 is a PlayStation 3 masturbation disk.

The writing is outright horrible and makes about as much sense as ME 3 but as a bonus you get the constant repetition of sentences like "Nanomachines" -"Nanomachines?" -"Nanomachines!" .

Someone hasn't played the MG series from start to finish. And it's obvious by how you're pointing out it makes about as much sense as ME3. MGS4 is how you let a character retire and die off. It's about 30% cutscene and 70% gameplay. MGS4 got it's 10/10 without having to buy off reviewers, so that has to tell you something.

Really?

I thought it was a pretentious and boring ending personally...

So from what I have read in this thread in Mass Effect you are actualy still playing a game, good to know that Mass Effect has actual gameplay in it's last hour.

MGS4 was alright, but it REALLY bugged me that the MGS theme music used in all three previous games was wholly and completely absent from the final game. For that alone it gets severely marked down (although the ridiculously long cutscenes also tend to be a pain after a while). Additionally, I felt like the game was a little too over the top even for MGS games, and often felt too contrived. They're different styles of games with different flaws, so I won't say its particularly better or worse than ME3. But hey, just my opinion. No need to go spreading it around.

Personally, if I wanted video games to lean to an art form, I would prefer it to go towards MGS4's style.

I'd prefer games remained games.

Games are an interactive media. If they are mostly cutscene but still have a bit of gameplay, it's still considered a game.

After playing Heavy Rain, I can't just think of games as just having a lot of gameplay. MGS4 took it to an extreme with the length of cutscenes but it had the right idea.

Then you should play Shadow of the Colossus. Keep in mind that a videogame needs gameplay, needs the player to interact with its world, its universe. MGS4 doesn't follow videogame rules, it's basically a movie with few gameplay. That's art? Yeah, it could be art... as a movie. IIRC Kojima wanted to be a movie director [smilie]http://social.bioware.com/images/forum/emoticons/uncertain.png[/smilie]

You did get to interact with the game world through gameplay.

1. I have played every MSG game from the very beginning, That doesn't make the storyline any less ludacris.

2. A normal play though of MSG 4 take around 13-14 hours if you do everything - the combined length of cut scenes in MSG 4 is 7 hours and 55 minutes and 15 seconds, You do the math.

The diff between MGS and ME is the difference between EA and devs like Nintendo and Valve

One treats unique IP as disposable, to be used up and discarded, while the other creates IP that we create lasting bonds with to create a loyal and recurring fanbase that passes the same loyalty to their kids. Link, mario, samus, solid snake, gordan freeman, etc.

nah, The Godfather made sense.

See that's it, that type of mentality is what ruins game series. To truly understand the whole plot of MGS you NEED to play all of the games, bar Metal Gear 1 and 2 but they will help with a couple character backstories. Mass Effect 3, was basically a stand alone experience so the new crowd wouldn't be confused.

At least Kojima stuck to what he believed in and didn't compromise his work like BioWare did.

BTW, Metal Gear Solid 3 is the best videogame ever, just putting that out there.

Haven't played MGS4, but an hour long cut scene at the end kinda turns me off. Not hating on anything, just don't think I would dig that.

Regardless of how much I love the ME series, nothing can compare to MGS imo (kinda biased here, been playing MGS for the better part of a decade). And MGS4? What a way to go! I never knew what to expect from the MGS4 ending, but it was brilliant and wrapped things up nicely.

That is how I feel,  I think bioware games for the most part have a good balance, between gameplay, dialog sequences, and then cutscenes.  Not to much of any of them but not neglecting any of them either.

Actually the ending cut scene is 93 minutes long so a hour and a half.

Kojima could really learn something from "brevity is the soul of wit" as good old Shakespeare said, The cut scenes play out as if they were written by a amateur playwright who cant find his footing.

Seriously go find any cut scene from msg 4 on the tube - watch it and then ask "couldn't this have been told far far more efficient and fluent?"

That's a movie not a game.  Kills replay value in my opinion.

I beg to differ. I've played MGS4 4 times and every time it makes me want to play all the games over again. Its the same as wanting to watch a great movie over, but its not a movie.

The gameplay really is fantastic.  All of the guns are customizable, and you can really play the way you want.  On my first playthrough I tried to get noticed as little as possible, and I gunned my way through my second playthrough.  I enjoy the over the top storytelling of the MGS series, but MGS 4 has the weakest storytelling of the series.  The game starts out great, but gets really contrived and ridiculous toward the end.  The ending cutscene doesn't add to the narrative, it basically just shows every character that is still living.  Then it another popular character who you thought was dead shows up, only to die after giving 20 minute monologue.  No thanks.  The game as a whole is fantastic though.

I don't know, any cutscene that long especialy after you have played the game 5 plus previous times I would think would get a been there done that feeling to it.  I like cutscenes but I like them mixed in and broken up with gameplay.

The cutscenes are at least interactive and have easter eggs...

Well that helps,  one thing that I loved about the SM mission in ME 2 was how it handled cutscenes and gameplay and mixed the two of them together.  Like how they used the oculus fight.

i bought a PS3 for the sole reason i wanted to play MGS4, uncharted(2), and infamous.

MGS4 was good. i remember i did skip alot of the cuts scenes though. i dont remember thinking i really wanted to play the game again. i just felt like i completed it and that was the end. i didnt need any more MGS. ill prolly try it out again in a month or two since no other good games are getting released this year. ...assains creed 3, ghost recon might be cool, is halo 4 this year? i think bioshock got pushed back. hopefully they dont crapshoot their ending.

infamous was alot better for me. it gave me the assassins creed roof running with electrical super powers. i enjoyed that game from start to finish(although arkham city is the best roof running ill ever experience). uncharted 2 was damn awesome. in my top 5 games played for sure. i havent even finished uncharted 3 yet, i havent really gotten into it. it seems like more of the same, but less interesting. uncharted really needs to feature some RPG elements like weapon customization and maybe some interesting abilities or combat features.

The MGS theme song was removed cause some Russian douche bag claimed it was stolen from him.

I have listened to his song and the MGS song and found no similarities. Kojima said he listened to both and thought they were a bit similar. So I assume he just removed the song to avoid any hold up's or lawsuits.
