My computer will often restart mid-game, anywhere from 5 minutes to 3 hours (usually 5 minutes). I've tried using only processors 4-7, updating drivers, etc to no avail. Posting basic info on my system in hopes someone can help.

What kind of cooling do you have installed in your pc? I found that my computer was hard restarting on a regular basis because my GPU was overheating, and your rig is far more powerful than mine.

It is also entirely possible that the difference in times relates to this. I.e. 3 hours when it started from cold, 5 minutes after the restart.

It only does this with bioware games, nothing else. Just those. I have 3 seperate cooling fans, one for the processor, one for the video card, one general fan.

It depends on how much everything else uses the graphics cards etc. I played Crysis no problem, but played wolfenstien and had restarts every 10-20 mins. Definition of Bioware Games? Curious note: why the 90 GB page file?

And unless those are very high power fans you could have an issue - I have one for CPU, GPU, 2 on the case and 2 internal fans.

NWN 2 specifically is the only other bioware game I play anymore, but I've played blizzard games, etc and none have caused this issue, and yes they are high power. I've checked temps, and they are ok during both NWN2 and DA:O.

Blizzard games arn't exactly high spec at the moment (WoW, Starcraft, Warcraft, Diablo) , where as NWN2 and DA:O are quite hefty (comparitivly) in the graphics. Both games use different engines, so that shouldn't be an issue. I'm also not sure about 8 cores - haven't gone past 4 myself. Could you explain how the restart occurs? Is it just an instant shut down, or does it power down normally etc?

It's an instant shut down with restart start afterwards basically a crash. Also one thing odd, Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable won't install, it tries to install on D: and there is no physical drive there. It says it runs out of room.

What PSU do you have?

Hmm that error could be gfx driver related. Have you tried newer drivers or rolling back, or perhaps they're corrupt?
Try uninstalling the gfx drivers, reboot into safe mode, run driver sweeper and remove left over files and reg entries.
Reboot and reinstall the drivers or install new ones.

Whats the rated wattage on the psu?
Couldn't find any info on the PSU, perhaps look at the sticker on it?

I you run ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series in dual mode you'll need atleast 600W

it's 450 with a max of 500...but 500 won't last very long. I don't run it in dual mode, the suggested from what I put in was 462, just a bit above where I'm at.

Your PSU is underpowered for that system, specifically the amps on your +12v rails. Both the HD4800 and the i7 processor can draw very high amps at high loads, so upgrading that might be worth it if you have the money to spare. Make sure that the amps on the +12v rails add up to over 60 amps and you should be ok.

Also, the fact that vcredist won't install is very strange. I know that the Catalyst drivers bundle a botched version of redist if you are running a 64-bit OS, so you could try uninstalling any visual C++ redist you have on the PC and then downloading the most recent versions from MS website.

I got the vcredist to install, had to disable my sd, smc drives to do it, then reenabled them. Also, I am currently running the game sans Catalyst, just the driver and that seems to be working fine. I'll update the forum when I know more.

I was having similar crash issues only AFTER the latest game patch.
My CCC was 9.10.
I found today on the AMD/ATI site a version 9.11. After I installed that, it's been smooth sailing so far.

Yeah I'm guessing those errors belong to Catalyst Control Center, I don't have an ATI card myself. But as whtnyte suggested try the 9.11 version.

Okay, here is a detailed description of what I did this morning:

Downloaded Visual C++ 2008

uninstalled all Visual C++ 2005 redistributable files,

installed Visual C++ 2008, then removed all the SDK crap it decided to install also!!!

uninstalled PhysX and downloaded the latest version from Nividia's web site,

reinstall new version of PhysX

Downloaded the ATI 9.11 Catalyst and installed, I just let it update the 9.10, I didn't uninstall 9.10 first.

I have now had the game running nonstop for 11 hours without a crash. There have been a few loading slow downs, nothing major, and they are random, next time it loads, might be seconds.

Here's the real kicker! I have 2 ATI cards in my machine, one is a lower end and runs my big screen TV. I've had music videos running on it all day also!

I'm not saying this is everyone's fix. I'm just telling everyone what I did and the result. If it leads someone to a solution for Nvidia cards, great! Otherwise, if your running ATI, give it a try, you might get the same results :))
