Well male then. And if its 'Major and Iconic' it has to be one of the big boys. Like Flash or Aquaman type big. Unless its Icon. in which case she was just being clever.
The current Robin (Damien Wayne) would be a fun choice if it weren't for the fact he was only 10. Because he's so very scary no one would dare comment on his sexuality to his face. But I'm sure he just doesn't like girls in the usual 10 year old way.
But now that I think of it, she didn't say 'hero' in the above. So could be one of the big villains. I always thought Joker was more the original definition of 'gay' but who knows?

Well that narrows it down considerably. Not many 'Major Iconic' characters haven't shown up yet on the new 52. So I'm going to take a completely random guess that its Wally West.

They specifically said male and gay.
There's also a possibility that when she says 'gay' she means 'bisexual.'
Nope, they are retconning the sexuality.

As for the Flash, I don't see it. So my bet is on some guy who has not been in the New 52 yet.

Yeah but Elton was always gay, Arthur has never came off as gay. It also would be stupid of DC to get rid of another marriage.HoonDing wrote...

Decent guess.
I do not follow comics currently, but would Robin/ Nightwing be viable as an actual heroic type?
Think this all Politically Correct hype myself, but I hope it goes better than the Quicksilver reveal for the sake of all fans.

As much as I like Tim he is not "Major and Iconic". Also from what I hear they are trying to set him up with Wonder Girl.Hellbound555 wrote...

u dont think it could be one of the big 3 do u? batman and superman are out if thats the case, too developed. WW on the other hand has so much leeway, but theres that whole amazon=feminism=lesbian train of thought stereotype that might not go over so well.

Newsarama
Fox News, ensuring plenty of website traffic, asks, “Could Superman be gay?” while across the Atlantic, the Daily Mail ponders, “Is Batman gay?” DC obviously won’t go that iconic — their Earth-2 counterparts are off the table, too — but beyond that, there’s the issue of how DiDio presented his announcement (or, rather, his response to a question from the Kapow! audience): The implication is that the character hasn’t yet appeared in the New 52, something supported by Batman writer Scott Snyder, who clarified this morning on Twitter that “the announcement was ‘a character not seen since the relaunch will come out as gay.’” (He followed that with the assertion that “Bruce’s orientation is Gotham.”)
Comic Book Resources
In a piece from ABC News, DC's senior vice president of publicity Courtney Simmons stated that it's a male character, being quoted as saying, "One of the major iconic DC characters will reveal that he is gay in a storyline in June." On Twitter, Scott Snyder, writer of DC's Batman and Swamp Thing, shot down rumors that Batman may be outed by tweeting, "the announcement was 'a character not seen since the relaunch will come out as gay.'"

Northstar is getting married to his boyfriend, and he's been openly gay for years. Even before that, from the beginning of the comic Alpha Flight, John Byrne threw out pretty broad hints that he was gay. There's no retcon there.
I'm really not a fan of many of the changes that took place in DC's New 52, but I don't see how changing a character's sexuality is any different than many of the other retcons they've pulled out recently in the new DC universe. I mean, Barbara Gordon can walk again, Wonder Woman is Zeus's daughter...those types of changes are pretty huge rewrites to the established lore. This is probably getting more press because DC is making it into a big deal. Eh.

I agree, it's just nice to see we are becoming more accepting of those who are different to ourselves.

Do people even know what this term means and applies to anymore?
The simple act of making a character gay, whether the character in question is established or not, is not political correctness in itself. It must be motivated by fear of the possibility of offending a minority group.
Almost always political correctness in entertainment is achieved and indicated by a company putting as little effort as possible into the content created to please the minority group and making sure it can be glanced over as insignificant and unintrusive by those not within the minority group. That's all it takes and anything more is unnecessary. DC here is going beyond the call and making an "iconic" character gay which is obviously going beyond the template of political correctness. It is not going beyond a publicity stunt, however.
I have no idea how "hype" can be politically correct in the entertainment industry. Are people going to pretend to be excited for something? Hype *generating* can use political correctness, but this is just news sites impartially reporting a story from one, passive interview Q&A.
I personally think PC is a good thing in society when taken by its basic fundamentals and not to the extreme. It's why we stop using words that offend certain groups. We say "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas" when talking to large groups of diverse people because it makes them all feel included whatever seasonal holidays they happen to celebrate. PC breeds more respectful, controlled behavior and discourages us to exclude others because of differences.
Obviously there's a stupid side to it when people think they can pose as a spokesperson for what minorities find offensive or when minorities get oversensitive about words and actions they should have no reason to believe are associated with malice or hatred, but PC's intent is well-meaning at heart.
