 I started BG2 SoA yesterday and I'm stuck in the asylum. I've searched everywhere and I can't find how to activate the portals in irenicus's chamber and the chamber to the east of where my cage was. I have the Wand of Frost key, the Wand of Lightning key and the Energy cells but I don't know what they're for and I don't know what else I could and should do besides wandering around looking for more keys or things to activate the portals. Could someone help?

You said asylum, but it sounds like you mean Irenicus' dungeon. You need the portal key. But first, you need to use the activation stone on the sewage golem so he opens the doors. Then you go north through a hallway into a bedroom. Then go right, and you will see the dryads. Now go south, and you will see a bedroom (Lots of traps here). The portal key is in the chest at the foot of the bed (trapped, so be ready to heal yourself).

Thanks for your reply. Yes I meant the starting Dungeon involving Irenicus. I made it to his chambers, (after the sewage golem opened the door to the Otyugh. after that I went into his bedroom and found the Dryads. I looted everything and visited the dryads but I'm not sure I got a specific key. I'll go check again. In the meantime, could you tell me if I missed something?

There are TWO bedrooms. The first bedroom has the helm of balduran. Go right, there are the dryads. Go past the dryads down on your screen, and there's another bedroom here (Ellesime's room). At the foot of the bed is the chest with the portal key - the portal key cannot be dropped once looted (guess that's to make sure you get out of the place).

NOTE: the items you listed (frost key, lightning key, energy cells) are not the portal key. In fact, I am pretty sure the item is called "portal key". Have you have any party members die or leave since you've been on this level?

I found the portal key, thanks. I was'nt looking well enough. Noone has died yet, no. Any advice on what lies ahead? I haven't played since about 2001.

Any advice? Well read descriptions of both your items and spells carefully. If a battle is too hard, might need to do it later (good example is the twisted rune hide-out). Don't forget to use potions and scrolls too, as they can make a big difference. Otherwise, just enjoy yourself! If you are playing a good party, Keldorn is a big help - his innate ability can dispel at 2x the level, meaning can both get rid of bad effects on your party and enemy buffs, as well as true seeing, getting rid of mage illusions. Korgan excellent for evil parties, berserker quite useful.
