I painted that geth purple. Geths love purple.

Or it could be because purple symbolizes royalty.

Speaking of purely cosmetic changes, how about a "geth ghillie suit?" Instead of twigs and leaves sticking out, it could be seemingly random hunks of metal making the geth look like a pile of scrap metal...purple scrap metal.

I like green on my geth.

And I would never shoot at a geth that suddenly appears when I turn around . . . even though we're fighting cerberus . . . or reapers . . . I wouldn't do that . . .

Yesterday, I joined a random lobby. One of the guys was playing with a geth engineer. The geth was colored purple.

Later, I joined a completely different lobby. There was another geth, also purple.

This morning, I joined a random game, and guess what I found. Another player, playing with a purple geth.

...and a couple days ago, I recolored my own geths purple and purple-ish blue. So I inadvertently contributed to the trend.

This has to be more than a funny coincidence. Seriously, what is going on? 

As others have noted, because it helps to avoid getting friendly fire and pissing off teammates when playing against the Geth.

Usually I make my geth yellow, red or bright blue for the same reason.  And while you may notice purple as a common choice - I notice the blues. 

Lots and lots of blue on all characters, particularly asari, turians and humans.

But seriously in all honesty is was a post back a few months ago where everyone who liked plkaying a geth agreed to play as a purple one to distinguish one another from the Enemy NPC's

Purple is my favorite color! Pretty much every character I have is purple and black highlights, or black with purple highlights.

My GI is copper/bronze coloured and my GE green-ish - dark blue with a brilliant green highlight colour, so he looks like an oil slick

My quarian engineer prefers black and hot pink, thank you. I'm pretty sure she shops at Hot Topic, or whatever the Mass Effect equivalent would be.

Oh wait, this is about geth. In that case: I always figured the bright colors were to help minimize friendly fire. Makes sense to me!

As an aside - surely the plural of Geth is Geth - since "we are Geth" it's more like a collective noun than anything else....
