With every new game comes new newbies, and with new newbies comes a bigger community, and with a bigger community comes a bigger need for good moderating.

And a need for more tea to release the stress from the advert trolls.

God, I had to of reported like a million of them.

I think a solution to the "abuse of power" thing(if they decide to go with the second option) would be to give a tag to certain diligent forum members.

Not make them mods, but something half-way. A tag that will not only let forum members know that these guys report stuff often, but give the forum member with the tag a boost of confidence.

Can't recall what forum it was that I got this idea from, but certain very helpful forum members got a "Good Member" tag.

Another forum had a "Helpful Member" tag.

I think we could all use something like that.

If by reporting you mean PM'ing a mod that's the only thing that gets things done. Hitting the report button just sends the data to EA, and nothing gets done about it.

I think they need to spend less time cracking down on silly spam posts and more on people who cause actual problems like personal attacks or the like.

Yes, PMs sent to mods. I know that clicking the report button is effectively fruitless.

And hell yeah its a good idea. I imagine that most troublemaking forum members MIGHT, keyword MIGHT rethink what they're doing if a Good/Helpful Member is posting in the same thread they're making trouble in.

From what I can tell, more people spam than cause personal attacks. Cracking down should occur on both of course(we all know that), but the frequency is definitely more rapid and plentiful with spam.

Your ideas are good, but I know that the Community team has a backlog of desired forum features a mile long. Things like adding more levels of user groups, like a "super awesome forum user" type category, may be more work than it seems. It is certainly to involve a lot of planning, if nothing else, and more priority would be given to usability and stability features than "this would be nice and/or fun" features.

I dunno, Cthulhu42. It would be difficult for me to investigate more than the 100% of the reports in my PM inbox I currently deal with.

Oh of course. Priorities are vital to keeping a good forum...well, good.

But if it could be managed, I'd hope it would be.

I can already think of certain forumites who would deserve such tags, and their presence in threads once having the aforementioned tags would hopefully cause some trolls to doubt their actions.

Plus, anything to add some cheer to a user would be wonderful. Promoting positivity would do wonders here.

I don't know if I would ever be given such a tag(as I get the feeling that my reputation insofar as mods go probably isn't very high, no matter how much I try to help or repent for past mistakes), but regardless of earning such a tag or not, the forum could use it.

I'd be happy just to see it implemented.

why dont we just paint a bullseye on them instead prince? :P "Look at me, Im a superhelpful forummember of excellence" oh ya, that'll go over well. Giving someone a title that basically says "Ha, Im better than you because the mods said so" to everyone in a thread will cause more problems than it'll solve.

As for the whole self-regulating forums thing, I wasnt here before the great move Woo, I wouldnt know anything about that. I do know, when someone tries to police a community this big, he or she just end up being THAT one annoying guy who keeps telling people what they should do. It really IS kinda up to you guys to sort this out. If I tried telling someone to stop trolling without a Mod title under my name, I'm just asking for a flamewar.

That's certainly a negative way to look at it. In no way would I think it implies one member is better than another.

Just that the tagged member is in good standing with the mods/devs and their attitude/actions are something to mimic.

Its the difference between a post that reads, "LOL U FAIL" and one that reads, "No worries, everyone makes that mistake at some point. This is what you can do to help..."

EDIT-

Also, nothing says you have to be public about reporting things. You don't have to say, "Reported." and end it there.

Its actually much better if you simply say nothing and report the incident to a moderator. That way, the problem gets rectified and no one's the wiser.

Believe me, if I'd have announced I was reporting everything I've reported, people would HAAAAATE me here.

Especially in spam threads- if you post in those, even to say you're reporting them, you are actually exacerbating the problem. Best to report and let it die or let it close than bump it up with a post.

How about hiring back those people who used to mod the forums during baldur's gate. The people hired on during NWN has given Bioware the horrible customer service record it has now.

As far as I can tell, during Baldur's Gate, the forums were hosted by our publisher. BioWare didn't have its own forums until October 2001. Also, forum Moderators are not customer service personnel. Moderators are volunteers who ensure the forums run smoothly. Primary game support has always been the responsibility of our publishers.

Disagreeing with a Moderator, staff member, game direction, or the way a game feature works is also not horrible customer service. It's a disagreement.

Just a random question Mr.Woo. Do you believe silly spam posts help balance out the boards? Especially the spoiler section of ME3? The negativity and pessimism there is ridiculous, sometimes people need something ridiculous to read, right?

Well I had no idea he was gone, but now he has come back he went and locked the 4k ending complaint thread. Yes it was very OT most of the time but I think it will annoy a lot of people, and It kept things in one place. The worst thing is him coming back and doing that is a bit like a new corrections officer coming in and ignoring all the old "arrangements " (which obviously did not exist in the first place) with the other mods to let the thread be. I don't doubt the fact that it breached the rules of the forum and to quote bungie "You have no rightsTM" but I am still disappointed.

Silly spam posts? No, I don't believe they add balance; however, there are lighthearted posts and humourous discussions that can counteract some of the extreme negativity. You can have positivity without resorting to spam.

Moderators can indeed see the log generated by the "report" button.  The problem is, it's not very specific-- even if you report a specific post, it usually only flags the thread. Result: the moderator has to dig through page after page looking for the problem post.

So yes, sending a PM is the most efficient way, at least in my opinion.  Most helpful is when someone uses the "Link" button and copy & pastes the URL from the address bar into their message.  That gets us to where we need to be.

If one opts to use the "report" button, then it's helpful to type in the name of the user you're concerned about in comment field.

I was able to maintain a lifestyle where I could eat at nice restaurants whenever I liked, and satisfy my geek hobbies more often than not. I was also able to save some money, as well as invest some, and still pay the bills. Other than that, I consider it a little rude to ask strangers what their salaries are.

Stan still has friends here. Plenty at Bioware. I can't see why he would break ties or burn bridges.

Then once you work at BioWare for 11 years and leave, you can break ties and move on. I, on the other hand, have chosen to remain a Moderator here.
