Not sure,

But I only think Allister is needed for when you need the traveler achievement and have to visit his sisters house. I have yet to get the travler achievement, so I am stuck having to be nice to the whiny little ****** for another 16 hours or so until I have his friendship up enough.

Not since Ja Ja Binks have I ever wanted to stab an ally in the neck so much.

he's only required for the story and even then pc's have a habit of showing up by themselves so you can leave him in camp the whole time if you prefer. it does not matter that much for your gameplay but it is a bit odd or even irritating for the story not to interact with him in a friendly way because the story presumes more or less that you are automatically an alistair fanboy.

Why would you need him?

He's nice to have. But so are all the other companions. I usually keep him around simply because he fits well into the storyline.

16 hours? Have you tried giving him gifts, I promise it doesn't take any longer than 5 minutes to finish that quests. It's even possible to do right after leaving Lothering. It kicks off at 26 approval or something once you've visited Redcliffe (Protip: You don't actually have to DO Redcliffe, you just need to go there so that he pours out his heart on being a royal bastard).

So he doesn't -have- to be in the party for the urn Arc?

As stated, no single character is needed. You can solo the game as any class, on any difficulty. The less well-rounded your party is though, the more difficult it will be.

Whenever a character is needed for storyline purposes, he or she will be forcefully added to your party as you may have noticed, so don't worry about that.

I really hate one-liner answers, but since you seem to have comprehension issues:

No.
