Stargazer scene actually not part of the story, but a message directly to the players?

It's not part of the ending it's just a scene telling the player Shepard became a legend and there will be several new DLC's and stories to buy. It's also clarified in the text box you get after the scene in case it was too vague and hard to interpret... also Bioware made sure to put the credits in between the ending and the stargazer DLC commercial just to point out that it's not part of the ending.
I made a thread about this earlier.

It's sad to see how big of a fanbase they managed to create - that we're defending them just not to believe they did such a crappy job - and how they let most of it go down the drain with just two games.

The Stargazer scene is just plain garbage, but you're right in that its only redeeming value is to tell the players directly, yes, that's the real ending and no it wasn't a dream. It's an epilogue. All epilogues are superfluous.

Um, no. In a story like Mass Effect that hinges on the long term affects of various choices, an epilogue is vitally important. This isn't even a bad epilogue. It's not an epilogue. It's barely even a coda.

Epilogues are usually very important in storytelling, either by tying up a loose end or hinting at something to come in the future.
Too much "assuming" going on. When I got to the epilogue and saw that (and the message after) I didn't think the stargazer meant DLC, my mind immediately jumped to a ME4 w/ Shepard. Anyone could be right, but it is much too vague to slam other people over how they interpreted it.

Straw have no beginning. Straws have no end. Straws are infinite. Millions of years after your pessimist assumptions has been eradicated and forgotten, straws will endure.

I think the best explanation of the StarGazer scene is that it is meant to be a nod by BW concerning their influences and their inspiration for making Mass Effect. They, BW, are meant to be the kid, looking up at the stars in wonder. It also underpins their desire to see others look into space and spectate its beauty and possibilities. This is the reason why Buzz Aldrin was used as a voice actor in the final scene, because undoubtedly the space missions influenced many of the BW development team.

Well you also have to think for a second, that a person from the way future is telling a story about Shepard based upon speculations on the records that he had prier to his knowledge.

"when you consider that you only get the Stargazer scene if you've imported a save or played through the game more than once"
Uhm... I got it on my clean no-import play-through as well

Well, noting that the scene doesn't change on control or synthesis, and it should, i don't think that scene is part of Mass Effect's universe. (at least, i won't consider it a part of the ME universe)
It reminded me to the end of Contact.

The fact that the old man says there's more to the story pretty much guarantees we haven't witnessed the ending of the story yet, I think. I hope. I hope that I think. I believe.
Anyways, 100% agree with Hellish on this. And it's not just because of his awesome name.

Honestly, I thought that scene was stupid and had no significance to the story or game. But thats just me. If Bioware was hinting towards more DLC, then they did it with that message at the end.
Also "the shepard", really? Am I not an individual to be spoken about in the correct tense?

including Buzz Aldrin was a nice touch. The only problem is the implications the character has.
If Buzz was the voice reading the text epilogues, it would have been nice. But the Stargazer in itself is a slap to the face.
