Dude[tte], if you think the endings in the "old days" were all sunshine and bunnies, you should read the Epic of Gilgamesh. Or Beowulf. Or the Iliad. Or Greek theatre. BTW I would love a Beowulf ending. Shepard, shaped and broken by war, seeks a last enemy to fight because peace? I don't know what to do with peace.
Once again, books, epics vs interactive media.
The fundamental difference being that drama means taking the passenger seat, whilst interactive media puts you at the helm. It's fine and dandy if you don't care, but don't expect everyone else to feel the same way. Many people only play games to shape their story, even if it's within the constraints developers put up.
And let's be perfectly frank: Mass Effects story isn't even worthy of licking the boots of the Illiad or the Gilgamesh epic. If someone's out to simply experience great drama, there are millions of better opportunities than any video game writer could come up on their best days.
I never said that everyone has to feel the same way as me. I was just pointing out that marrying the princess and growing old in a cotton candy castle has not really ever been a narrative standard. In fact, many great literary works have endings that are not even just "not happy", they are bleak and crushing and nihilistic. And yet they are beautiful.
I am also not saying that ME is comparable to the epic of Gilgamesh, lol
