Is Liara really the 'canon/preferred' LI?

ME2's romances were equal to each other, as a self-contained game; I'm not comparing them to the ME1 romances. And I certainly don't recall Merrill having less than Isabela to speak of.Mr.House wrote...

Show me one Bioware game where all romances where treated equal?
Not to mention that "but they did this before" is not a good reason why it's right to do it now.

Well, it wouldn't bother you in the first place.

Liara has the best written romance arc throughout the series, but I don't think the devs were pushing her as the preferred romance option.
So... Liara gets the best written romance of the trilogy according to you, yet that's not a sign she has the preferred romance?

Its not like she is given an entire comic, then a digital comic, then a DLC, then a huge focus in the third game, then made to be the canon friend (like Garrus, but he is at least awesome), or you know forced to be with your squad mission after mission.
So no Liara is not not canon, but she was given far better treatment then any other character in the series.

Liara is the writer's pet.
Ashley is the one featured in the marketing because Bioware thought they could sell more copies that way.
Nobody is canon.

That assumes that the writers sat down with the intention of writing a romance plot for Liara that was better than the others.
Remember Jacob? He was supposed to be an awesome character in Mass Effect 2.
To put it this way: Sometimes the writers step up to the plate and hit a home run. Other times it is a big swing and a miss. Either way, it is all partly chance.

"Best written" is as vague and subjective a concept as "best ending".
Liara was chosen as the character who ends up at the start of ME2 with the most profound emotional tie to Shepard. She is the reason Shepard is not in Collector hands. Given what she had to go through to find Shepard and deliver him/her to Cerebus, and what that decision ultimately cost her in both lives and remorse, that her interactions both romantic and platonic would be more emotionally charged and capable of providing more avenues for expansion is a natural byproduct and a story that writes itself.
She was uniquely qualified to undertake this role as the story was written due to no conflicts of interest with Cerebus (Miranda), racial/political interest (her mother, the Council, etc.), the depth of knowledge of the enemy (through Prothean research), and not being an IF-THEN where continuing to the next story was concerned (Ashley, Wrex, Kaidan), or a loosely connected merc/person with little defined interest in Shepard (Tali).
Like I explained earlier. That's really all there is to it. There are no books, movies, or any other pieces of literature/works of fiction or nonfiction that do not have principals. There are no "extras" who are fleshed out in equal fashion as the principals. If you're going to have an issue with this, you might as well accuse Hermoine Granger's romance of being favored over Draco Malfoy's, or other such absurd complaints. So what was Rowling supposed to do? Switch Hermoine and Weasley over to Slytheirn and have Harry running around with Draco in the second half of the series so we could get a proper look at his chick and nobody looked like the writer's favorite? C'mon now.
Now if Liara had been no more important to the main idea than XO Pressly and yet still had a more extensively written romance than the squadmates? You have something to discuss then.

I would have no issue with this if all of the LIs were treated equally, but the heavy emphasis on Liara is a bit irksome. Just one example: why does Liara always come up to Shepards cabin, uninvitied, to offer unwarrented comfort or advice? Why couldn't have been [insert your LI here] to comfort Shepard instead?
Just my two cents.
P.S. I think it would've been amusing to see Liara and Javik hook up if she was not persued...

Had Bioware written in more crew member relationships for characters that were not being romanced by Shepard, I think Kaidan would been a much better choice to hook up with Liara. Depending on dialogue choices and Shepard's gender, Kaidan can admit to being attracted to Liara in ME1. Its implied in ME3 that the two bonded over being biotics, and they are both pro-Council paragons.
