What sucks is declaring a canon LI almost declares a canon Shepard. There are only so many versions of Shepards who'd like Liara. Not everyone is the same. And assuming they are is the real issue. Not Liara.

Canon? Nah. Preferred? Kind of. I think a lot of Liara's extra content compared to the other 5 original ME1 squadmates comes from the fact that she is the only one of the original 5 guaranteed to be alive by ME3.
Now why is this important? It's clear that in ME3 the writers wanted to allow Shepard/the player to voice the emotions he/she is going through, more so than ME1 and ME2. This was a good thing. But it also opens the question: Who does Shepard voice these emotions to? For it to be meaningful to Shepard, it has to be someone he's known for a long time. That eliminates new characters like Vega, Traynor, Cortez, etc. Garrus and Tali can both be dead, so if the writers wanted to ensure that the player sees this content it can't be them. Ash and Kaidan are off the Normandy for the first third of the game, and they can actually be killed or told to stay off the Normandy, so it can't be them. Wrex is again too busy leading his people to join up on the Normandy, so it can't be him.
This left only two really viable options: Liara and Joker. As much as I love Jeff, and he does get some good emotional moments, he's just not the right character to be the "listening ear", so to speak. Liara fit. So they went with her.
I don't see any harm in it. Liara's the best romance anyways. (And Kaidan is second)
