Myself.  Why would I be speaking for anyone else?

I'm just asking. I couldn't tell, by your train of thought towards the end there.

I don't see any harm in it. Liara's the best romance anyways. (And Kaidan is second)

For the writers I would say yes. They try very hard o force her on the gamer in 3.

There's no canon waifu but some are more canon than others.

Liara is not canon; however, for budget reasons everyone not romancing Liara gets the exact same cutscene as liaramancers.

I've got with just about everyone but Liara, so she clearly isn't mandatory.

Nope, she's just the annoying writers' pet you can't tell to GTFO.

It is a bit of a myth that Liara got more content than every other character. It would be more accurate to say that Liara and Garrus got more content than every other character, as they both have a similar amount of dialogue and LI content in Mass Effect 3.

The difference is that people generally don't complain about Garrus' content because if he's not your Shep's LI, he's probably your Shep's bro. The real issue isn't so much a content imbalance as it is some fans griping that characters that aren't their favorites got more content than their favorites. They don't necessarily want all characters to have an equal amount of content, they just want the characters they like most to have more.

Of course nothing is wrong with that and in some ways it is understandable, but dressing the complaints up as an argument for fairness, is a bit disingenuous.

Oh, I'm well aware that Garrus and Liara are both the "top shelf" companions.

It's just a shame that the others are such varying levels of aterthoughts

Honestly I think Bioware kind of painted itself into a corner in Mass Effect 2. As much as I like some of the "new" characters, introducing an entirely new cast in the second game and then sending them all on a mission where they could all potentially be killed, created too many variables to account for in the third game. I think Mass Effect 2's design guaranteed that not all squadmates would get an equal amount of content in the third game.

If there is a lesson there for Bioware I think it is that in a trilogy it is better to stick to a core cast through all three games, minus perhaps a casualty or two along the way or one or two additions, and to save your suicide mission for the final chapter.

Garrus is also the writers pet. Name me one Bioware game where a few characters did not get more attention/content/prefrences.

Not to the extent of Liara. Garrus does have this forced kind of friendship I won't deny that, but he is given almost no real importance in the big picture of the storyline, and has pretty weak plot armor compared to Liara.

Honestly how many times does this tread keep coming back?

If people like Liara she got just the right amount of content or not enough
If people dont like Liara she got to much content for them

Its like watching a dog barf out its food, eat it again, then barf it out again just to eat it AGAIN!
Disgusting, pointless and stupid.

I'm a Garrusmancer to the bone, but Garrus trumps Liara as far as in-game content goes. He always has a line or two to say after each mission whereas Liara is often silent except for "main" missions, and Garrus moves around the ship more than Liara AND has a date scene. (Unless I was in a coma, I don't think Liara has a proper date on the Citadel?)

That being said, what interactions we do have with Liara have a tone to them that could be taken as romantic or hopefully romantic (on her end). This could rub people the wrong way who prefer other LIs, whereas Garrus's interjections are "all good" cuz' he's a bro and his comments are non-romantic. It's not even that Liara's content is over-riding another character's necessarily...it's just the odd tone that puts people off because they percieve it as Liara stepping on the toes of their LI by taking away a scene from them.

Ashley was shorted, I agree. I don't think that's Liara's fault, though, it's the writer's. Thane and Jacob had it a million times worse (content-wise) if that offers some condolence via schadenfreude?

A fair point. The discussion is purely academic, since the game content isn't going to change. I find it an interesting discussion regardless.

For me, I don't so much mind that Liara got a lot of content. My concern is the proportionality of her content in relation to the other characters, particularly in terms of her romance arc. That is, the other Love Interests have fewer lines, shorter scenes, etc. Thus, it seems that she did get preferential treatment, even though there is no true “canon” romance.

Yes actually. I would not have stated it if I did not believe it. Of course, there will always be a few people that post utter drivel, but the topic does elicit some interesting viewpoints.

Now, one may think (perhaps rightly so) that it's "much ado about nothing," but I think that such discussions are not entirely pointless. They cause one to critically analyze the storyline and note where improvements (if applicable) can be made for future storylines.

If nothing else, it’s amusing to watch such things unfold... provided that people keep their comments civil and intelligent.

What do you mean by prefered?
The writers? Yes.
Shepard? Probably.
You? Sounds like a personal opinion.
