She clearly is the writers pet,I would trade her for Aria or the asari councilor Tevos.

Not sure why anyone would prefer Tevos over anyone. Among the three, she's the least useful. She'd just stand around the Normandy's war room.

Yeah, I don't know about people like Tevos either. I don't know anything about her. Who is she to Shepard exactly?

The good thing about the variety of romances that do exist was that they opened up (or extended upon) various roleplaying ideas for Shepard him/herself. It's more about Shepard than it is about romance. It says a lot about Shepard by looking at the person they hooked up with. Each of them tell different kind of stories, sort like the Earthborn/Colonist/Sole Survivor/War Hero/etc stuff. Liking Ashley entails a little bit about how Shep might think about humanity's role (same with Miranda, but in a more pro-Cerberus slant). Liara signifies a lot about galactic unity.. Shiala has that line about Asari beliefs, about how all of us connected. A Shepard who is enticed by that is a completely different person than the Ashley or Miranda one. Jack doesn't signify many political points, but she represents rebelliousness, freedom, survival at any cost.. Garrus might have an appeal for those concerned about justice (of course, there's more than that.. but I've never played a Femshep, so I don't know the details).

Anyways, I don't want to go through all of them, but you get the point. There are roleplaying possibilities all over the place. There is no "best". And pushing a best pushes Shepard into a corner as well. It's similar to real life. You can't just toss any random spouse to any random guy or girl, and expect them to like each other.

That sounds to be like a load of complete nonsense.

People romance Garrus because they like Garrus. I seriously doubt 'justice' factors much into it at all.

That would have been superb and I'd have her as Shep's second in command.

Not talking about usefulness, she's just better looking.

You're missing the point. I'm talking about how companions open up roleplaying possibilities. Garrus is a world in and of himself, and people who enjoy his presence enough get attached or absorb some of those aspects. I'm just brainstorming various things, and don't have the time or experience to go through every possibility. Don't expect me to hold your hand through everything. You should be able to extrapolate what I was trying to say, without reducing yourself to yet another ****-ish comeback.

Liara is the writer's pet.

Ashley is the one featured in the marketing because Bioware thought they could sell more copies that way.

Nobody is canon.

Garrus is canon romance, they put more effort into his romance then anyone. *cough*citadeldlctangodance*cough*

Liara was more so the character that everyone would have no matter what. you can keep Garrus from joining, Wrex can died same with ashley or kaiden. leaving her and tail, who can died in the ME2 along with every other party member. So no other romance had that guarantee of being able.

this may also be the reason liara get the bigger role andher own dlc too.

I know I'm a Liara Fan but Liara is one of the best characters and interesting characters. I tried Ashley and couple others but didn't like theirs. I liked Liara and Tal'is the best but Liara was the most interesting. In SciFi I like dating non-humans as well because it SciFi. In reality it only humans unless Aliens come around. Liara story was great and interesting, I loved the romancing of Shepard and Liara.

But is that a that because she herself is an interesting character or because the writers put more effort into her character? I'm not trying to say they intenntionally underwrote anyone else (minus garrus i guess. never romanced him, so don't know) just that, she's the only immortal one, and to me, that adds a layer of inequality to her character.

EDIT: spelling

The books are very careful about referring to Command Shepard, and thus, there is no canon for their decision-based plot points. Well, except Anderson.

I have little issues with Liara, but she just seems like an inconsistent character. While I can accept her changes in ME2, she was a bit weird in ME3 as many here have pointed out already.

While I respect your opinion, I can't agree with the immortality critisism of her. The reasom most characters could die si because they were ME2 squadmates. And the Suicide Mission, while an amazing mission, made most of the cast conditional. Liara is only immortal in the same way James and EDI were: by not being full ME2 squadmates.
