Hi I would like to discuss all reasons why we can´t have back our favourite or hated sqadmates:

1.
They could be dead, with events of ME 1 and 2 they could died - it´s a simple.

2.
Survival and variables - imagine if the ME2 squadmates could be also ME3 squadies - I don´t mean Tali and Garrus, it could lead to pretty painfull empty character list. If your decisions lead them to death or disloyal I don´t see a point or chance to have them back on Normandy.

3.
ME1 and 2 death of Tali, Garrus, Legion, Wrex - if you will just lose two characters than you will lose also lot of conversations for ME3 and in the end death for three of them will shape events in ME3. I am trying to say that if every character has such impact on outcome in ME3 than we could have so many variables ...
None of other squadmates from ME2 have such a great impact on events in ME3, just Tali and Legion - effect of succeful outcome in ME3 deppend how did you handle their loyality and survival. If you betrayed or leave to die one of them you cannot reach a peace.

4.
Conversations, just imagine how many conversations BioWare would need for characters from previous ME as a sqadmates to ME3 - hard to say - maybe another SWTOR (maybe few walls). Each of characters has developed own personality and if you want to have them in ME3 it could lead to 3 paths:
- first is each character earned full own unique dialogs - impossible (lot of money, time)
- second each character earned own unique dialogs but only in cut version - like a dlc squadmantes ( less money and time - but also lack of quality)
- third they could sort characters to few classes which have almost same or similiar dialogs ( they did something very similiar to Ashley and Kaidan - and I guess i am not the only one who don´t like this kind of path )

5.
Plotarmor
Some guys don´t like a plotarmor of Liara, well if it wasn´t her than someone else who has such plot armor. She is important in some way same as Sheppard, if wasn´t her than Sheppard would die at start of ME2, if wasn´t her than we have a lot of trouble in ME1 maybe even don´t reach a conduit - and now she is helping us with Crucible. Such a character we could find in every RPG game - each RPG game need some pillars, imagine how it fail in other game where you alway walk forward from place to place (Arkania - no pillars, no basement - whole game in mess). (ME1 only VS and Wrex could died, ME1, 2, 3 - Joker, Liara, Anderson, Hacket... DA:O - Morrigan, DA2 - Anders)

IF another character has such a plot armor than peoples would complain about him/her but there isn´t atleast not from squadmantes.O wait - Sheppard has such a plotarmor he/she fought with the odds from start and yet he/she survived where others had fall,

Story just need some of these characters to continue, imagine what could happened if Liara just died at ME1 or you never meet her - You could never win in ME1 or died at start of ME2 - unfortunately for someone yes she is important for storyteliing.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How we could bring them back ?
Only in DLCs, as a key characters in next missions - they still can be replaced with random character but nothing more - there is no way to bring them back to Normandy. There is not much to do - only DLCs can bring them back to meet them again but nothing more than that and still I would like it .

Bringing those characters back would have been difficult but not impossible. In fact, if you replay ME2, it's implied that was their original intent anyway, which explains why ME2 is focused so much on building a team.
However, it seems that BW suddenly decided that taking the lazy way out with everything is okay when they were designing ME3.

I am thinking the same thing. Except I think we should have the option to pick and choose who is on the crew at some point so if we don't want Liara we can say work on the Crucible I want Jack, Miranda, Samara, Aria, or someone else as my biotic. If they could have done something like this I feel it would make more people happen and we wouldn't complain about certain thing like plot armor.

What I don't like is the fact that the game makes you take certain squadmates for missions. You have to take Liara to Thessia and Eden Prime no matter what. You have to take Tali on the dreadnought and the Reaper Base no matter what. You have to take EDI to Cronos Station no matter what. Bioware essentially took away some of the decisions we had free-reign on in ME2. Having multiple playthroughs was fun, because you could take set squad that you wanted on one playthrough the majority of the time and a different squad on another and another...etc. Instead, we get the same dialogue from certain characters every time because we're forced to take them. It's really lame.

Which is also why I don't get why you can't take Wrex or Legion along during their story arcs if the game makes you take Liara, Tali, and EDI because "it's important to the story" so to say. Just make them a temporary squadmate because for obvious reasons they can't be permanent but they can still be temporary, especially since Wrex and Legion both come along anyways.

Bioware really dropped the ball on squadmates. If you think about it, you can see it really is horribly done.

Liara on Thessia was interesting but not important - if you picked Javik - it gave to story little more drama and revelations, but her presence was not so important - but take it from different angle ... I guess even greater impact on drama has a presence of Javik´s interaction with commander.

Almost each of priority mission you could compare with some kind of loyality mission from previous games:
- Rannoch and geth dreadnaught - Tali if alive - you cant switch her if I am not mistaken
- Thessia - Liara - same
- Palaven - reunion with Garrus - same
- Citadel + Mars - VS chat and return - same
- Edi - Cerb base

In some way is even plot armor impact of survival your squadmates... ofc if you want good outcome :)

I was pretty bummed that Wrex wasn't a party member in ME3, even Grunt would have been a great addition, I missed not having a Krogan option, instead we get Vega, lame Bioware!

none of the ME2 squaddies were back, that one of the biggest disappointments of the game.

You don't understand how excited I was when Wrex came back on board the Normandy. Only to have my hopes and dreams get completely shattered when I learned all he did was essentially hang out in the war room. :(

I hear that, I loved seeing that magnificent bastard board the Normandy, ripping on Shep and Garrus, trolling salarians only to have to part when Tuchanka's problems where resolved. Tuchanka will always be my favourite main mission of ME3, it was just perfect, also ripping on Wreav was funny too:D

+1 loved that mission.

Got quite emotional once Mordin sacrificed himself and the Vigil music started, with the cure pouring over the Krogan.  :crying:
