I hope this has not discussed before...

Starfang seems to have better basic stats than the Keening Blade. The Keening Blade seems to have better enchantments, although it is hard to say what's better. As an arcane warrior I'm using Spellweaver, so I don't want to use them myself. One of the two is intended for Alistair.

Starfang:
11.90 Damage
3,40% Critical chance
4.20 Armor penetration
1.0 Strength modifier
+3 Dexterity
+3 Damage
+2.5 Armor penetration

Keening Blade:
11.20 Damage
3.20% Critical chance
4.00 Armor penetration
1.0 Strength modifier
+2.0 Armor penetration
+6 Attack
+3 Cold damage

Any advice?

As long as you are using allistair as tank, i'd suggest giving him starfang. It has higher armor penetration and because of the +3 dex he gets a ittle harder to hit -> starfang.

Where do you pick up Keening Blade?

Overall, I'd say Starfang, but I just got a great idea for a Dual-wield warrior. ;)

You can get it in the Unbound quest. There are notes on the bodies of two adventurers (Elven Ruins and Ruined Temple) and one adventurer you'll meet in Tapster's. After that you'll get a quest which leads to Denerim (Quaint Hovel in the Dirty Back Alley). It's dropped by Gaxkang.

Ah, thanks. I must've just forgotten about the Keening Blade, since I wouldn't have had much use for it in the party with which I last killed Gaxkang.

I couldn't bring myself to use Starfang. It's so stupid looking.

I agree with you on that one.

It's a bit hard to select weapons and armor that both look good and have stats that match your character. Especially for arcane warriors there is not much choice. ;)

I like the Dalish-type sword model a lot, and Spellweaver (which uses it) has tolerable stats for a Silverite weapon.

I think it's actually harder for a Warrior or Rogue to find nice-looking longswords because they don't have that option. For me it was a choice between Topsider's Honor and Imperial Edge - both of them are pretty nice looking, but neither is very good.

Alistair and Oghren both ended up being geared considerably better than I was, since they got all the good ugly gear and I got all the cool-looking suboptimal stuff. Heh.

Hehe. Most of the stuff seems to be intended for warriors. The enchanted items often have buffs to things like strength and stamina and are not very useful for arcane warriors. My character ended up with the Diligence armor set, Spellweaver and the obvious rings, amulet, belt and staff for a mage. At least I am lucky that the armor and sword don't look bad. ;)

Starfang. Higher damage, higher critical chance and significantly more armor penetration, plus the 3 Dexterity is nice. In addition, the damage bonus from Keening Blade is cold, which will be resisted by certain enemies.

Keening Blade has .7 less damage, plus cold damage can be resisted. It has .7 less armor penetration, .2 less Critical chance, and adds nothing to your defense.

All of this in exchange for a net +3 attack doesn't seem very attractive. . .

I loved Starfang... Looked truly awesome. Course it looked obviously magical instead of the more "realistic" or bland look of the rest of the weaponry.

I loved having Starfang strapped to my back... My first playthrough never got the random questline for the materials so  I missed it.

Most DA:O weaponry and armor is very very bland, especially the mid level stuff and light armors. (This isn't counting the truly horrifyingly ugly Mage helms... Whoever designed those should be fired. F I R E D !)

Anyhow... <3 Starfang.

I'm talking Longsword not 2hander... Haven't wielded the 2hand version.

It's literally a longer version. Looks almost exactly the same.

I happen to like the 2h Starfang better than than the 1h version. I guess it depends on how long you want to wait for a really good 2h weapon. As for the original question, Starfang, is the best all around 1h sword. For dual wielding it goes nicely with the axe Bohdan sells.

If you're not a 1h warrior yourself, I'd give Starfang (2h) to one of your 2h warriors and toss Keening to Alistair, since nobody else can use it. Of course, I like to keep my party members well equipped, so YMMV.

I know, right? Where's my hide helm option. As if my elf doesn't look silly enough without a feathered hat.

I think Starfang looks cool though. I'm annoyed that the random encounter for it never showed up on this character though :/

I used the Starfang for so long on my dual-wielding Warrior that as soon as I could I ditched it for a Veshialle and the Axe of the Grey. Perhaps not 100% optimal (though I did enjoy having +8% crit from my weapons), but it was more than effective enough for going through Hard.
