Apparently, Alistair becoming king is the canon version of that particular issue, although "default" might be slightly more accurate than "canon." From what I've seen in the books and comics, it is assumed that he became king.
Does anyone know if there is a similarly canon fate for the Warden?
I personally felt that the "martyr" ending for the Warden was the most--for a lack of a better word--logical. But now I wonder if choosing that ending actually puts me in a minority.
I know David Gaider has said that "the story of the Warden is over." But I'm wondering if there is a default fate for him/her in future games.
Canon as to the fate of the Warden in future DA Games?

Only bits and pieces of the books like the inquisition and such are canon. The warden could be anywhere depending on what you did with him/her.

I don't think we'll ever have a chance to play out the fate of our wardens. It's been stated that the warden's story is finished, so the warden has just vanished... one way or the other.

From what I understand, nothing in the DA version is "canon", giving that these games are completely customisable. If "default" is canon, then that would mean that both PCs in DA:O and DA2 are male. The story changes slightly if you play as female, which seems to support my theory of "default" not being "canon".
I think what Gaider is trying to say is that the Warden's story is over because he/she's no longer the main character (Hawke is in DA2, and the PC in DA3). That doesn't mean that he/she can't make an appearance and help out at one point.

That's how I took it too. Not that they won't appear, but you won't get a choice to play as them or influence their decisions anymore...

Unknown. I remember reading a thread that someone hinted that Alistair did the Dark Ritial with Morrigan hinting the Warden is still alive by canon in the latest piece by David Gaider. I haven't been able to verify this theory but it's a theory.

There is no canon, silly! Well, officially, anyway xD
The comics and anything outside the actual games are not "canon"; they are, um, sort of an AU version of your game, if you want to think of it that way. Like if someone "read" your game and then wrote fanfiction about it. But just because Alistair is king in that fanfiction (i.e. the comics) doesn't mean he will be king in your DA3 if you left him as a Warden.
So the "canon" fate of the Warden is whatever happened in YOUR game. It's your own unique canon.
As for what the devs prefer, I am going to wager that they prefer a male Warden who did the Dark Ritual with Morrigan. I say this because I felt like the Morrigan thing was really pushed at me; the first time I agreed to the Dark Ritual, the cut scene was so ridiculous, as if my Warden and Morrigan were in a romance when in reality my Warden should have been nervous or disgusted to do this with Morrigan because my Warden was in a committed relationship with Zevran at the time. But the cut scene was like, NO, SEXY TIMES NOW! My Warden looked like he was in a porno with her lol
Then I played Witch Hunt recently, and for the life of me I can't figure out why my Warden wanted to find Morrigan. It was not explained in the DLC. She was just his friend. But up until the final conversation with her, I got the feeling that I was being made to role-play the fact that my Warden was in love with Morrigan (and this was a Warden who had NOT done the Dark Ritual with her!) and was either 1. mad at her for leaving, or 2. eager to go through the mirror with her and spend the rest of his life with her.
So I think devs favor a male Warden who did the ritual and goes through the mirror with his true love Morrigan.

I would say the "canon" fate for the Warden in the books and comics would be martyr, simply because it would be impossible to write the Warden's character in a way that makes him/her sound/behave like your character, so the easiest way to solve that is to presume he/she sacrificed themselves killing the Archdemon.

We can't decide what i canon, that is a term used as "the officially accepted storyline."
But the default Bioware used themselves is one where he is king and where Wynne went with Shale.

Default is not canon, not even what Bioware uses is official. Bioware has said that time and time again. The "Canon" is whatever you want the story to be.
Plus, there is such a thing as "Headcannon" . . .

I should probably clarify my thinking. I enjoy reading the Dragon Age books and the comics and such. But it would bother me if those items--or future Dragon Age games--contradicted the "canon" story I have constructed by my game choices.
Alistair as king is a great example. You could have played DA:O without choosing to place him on the trone, and your "canon" would thus differ from the default setting in the books, comics, etc.

I almost never make Alistair King. He seems far happier remaining a Grey warden, and being together with my Human Mage warden without politics getting in the way.
I just wish there had been a way to keep both of them alive and together that didn't involve doing the Dark Ritual with Morrigan

my personal canon is that Chandra (my arcane warrior mage amell) is currently still hanging w/the wardens. she is just not commander in ferelden anymore...hiding from crazy ex-girlfriend at Wishaupt (misspelled i know)
