Been banned twice in my life, never on BSN though.

Once a friend took over the keyboard and wrote some crazy stuff in a telnet chat session. Instant ban.

The other time I called myself "Lord " something in a MUD, and apparently that was a protected title. Disturbingly, when you caught in that particular MUD, your character was thrown in jail and... well, bad things would happen to you

24h ban for posting a picture with pirates in it. The picture was interpreted as advocacy of software piracy.

Easiest way to get banned is to bring personal attacks into the conversation.

And, yes, that includes calling someone an idiot or saying they're stupid. I like to think that, by and large, the forum has a sufficient maturity level that they can engage in discussion without resorting to insults. As additions to a discussion, they're worthless, and serve only to 'put someone in their place'.

And, of course, how you present yourself is going to hold some weight.

I have yet to be banned, as I usually operate inside of rules, and when I don't, the authorities will be the last to know.

I was also banned once simply for voicing my opinion on GMagnum's perma-ban. I made a poll to see how many folks wanted to see good old GMag back. The poll got closed and I was banned for 24h.

You know, I've been wondering where that rascal had been.  I didn't realize he'd gotten the perma ban. Wonder why?  It seems several old names have gone away, but I just assumed it happened because of ME3 and the backlash.  I hate to hear that as GMags was always entertaining and even on-point (in his/her own language).
