These threads need one big thread of Liara hate. Go ahead, please make another using my suggestion.

I like Liara for...I don't know. I just do. I can't really explain why. I've enjoyed watching her mature. In the first one she was kind of naive. In the second one, if felt like she had really grown over the fictional two years.

Yeah it keeps getting brought up in separate threads; kind of annoying. I wouldn't exactly call it "hate" but criticisms should maybe be put into a single thread.

But since we are on the topic, my feelings are perfectly described via this pic from BioWare Confessions. Whenever asked of my opinion on her, I use this.

Well, that happens when the lead writer falls in love with a character.

Well, to be honest I like more what she represent - Shepard's best friend who loves him/her. Her personality itself is nice, though maybe a little too perfect. Beautiful, smart and nice all in the same character.

Different opinions maybe? Different tastes. Some like tough womans, some like shy womans, some like sissy mans, some like over sized gorilla mans etc...

Why people love Garrus? Who would not love Garrus?
Why people love Tali?
Why people love Thane?
Why people love those other characters? im too lazy to write them

Liara's personality changes from game to game. That's why I wonder how some people continue to like her. I really liked her in ME1, but the "Liaras" from ME2 and ME3 are not the same Liara anymore.

Liara's evolution:
ME1: A bookworm, shy, bad social skills
ME2: A tough girl, threatens people
ME2 LotSB: A crybaby, very emotional, pretends to be tough in front of the Shadow Broker
ME3: Insecure, tough girl before Thessia, crybaby after Thessia though she still tries to be tough

She's loyal, honest and compassionate--three traits I find hard to believe in people these days, but I don't doubt them in her. I admire her intelligence and her beauty. I normally don't trust people easily, let alone characters in a video game. Something about her makes it easy for me to believe her, and believe in her. Her realness is endearing to me and it's something I can't take for granted. It's nice to know she'll always have my Shepard's back, especially as her LI. Her personality isn't one that everyone finds attractive, but to me it is. Personal preferences and such. If you don't like her already, it might take a long time for her to grow on you, and that's only if you give her a chance.

Well, maybe ppl like Liara since she's an interesting character?
It's all about taste.

I can't romance her since she's not my type, but I can like her as a friend - a fascinating one.

No need to "hate her" just because she's no LI for me.

I have a soft-spot for the the intelligent girls in games. The sort of reserved intelligence you'd find in a historian or a mathematician, rather than the frantic kind you'd find in tech-geeks like Tali ( though don't get me wrong, I love Tali). My only issue is how her personality seemed to flip-flop in every game. I would've preferred she remained as an awkward archaeologist. ME3 somewhat returned her to her ME1 incarnation, though not entirely. That said, I'm all right with the change; I adjusted.

Honestly, I find just something about her off-putting. Her personality jumping all over the place is a problem for me too. My issue is that it feels like they (bioware) spend all their time developing Liara romance/friendship that the other love interests feel like an afterthought. It's also off-putting that I have to have her as my friend. Why can't she just be someone I work with?

I'm a nerd myself so I tend to like nerdy characters. I liked Liara instantly but what really won me over was her not understanding Shepard's joke and saying she wanted to do an "in depth study" of her. I mean if I had a pound for ever time I accidentally said that while talking to a beautiful woman. Okay not quite but I do tend to say something stupid so I can relate.

Some people don't like how much Liara changed from ME1 to ME2, I didn't have a problem with it. Liara's young, I don't think so much changed as grew up.

Also I found Liara's powers to be very useful in ME1 so I took her on missions a lot. I find if I take a character out more often I tend to get to like them more.

In a way I have to concur Aurora's statement:

There is currently no way to tell Liara to "respect some distance". I said, she's a friend to my Shepard, so I don't run into that issue that much. But other people simply want to keep it professional with Liara. And another bunch of fans simply dislike her and don't want to deal with Liara that much.

It's a shame you can't tell Liara you feel unsure about the "gift" in the farewell scene. From a RP PoV, my Shepard is in love with Ashley and the gift is too intimate for him. But refusing that gift makes him acting like a d*ck - something he simply isn't.

Problem

Similarly, I can't tell Tali "no, you stay on Rannoch", or Javick "you might be prothean, but you're a dick, so you go play with the crucible or something" or James "I have a partner, stop your school yard flirting with me" and so on.

To OP: Why does anyone like anything?

To quote myself in the last of these threads...

Apathy1989 wrote...

meh Liara is a character I have alot of mixed feelings about.

On some levels she is great - intelligent, loyal, stable, enough personal issues to be interesting, beautiful

On other levels she is annoying - mono-toned voice, massive character swings between games, self-righteous, inconsistent emotional reactions to trauma, terrible at being a shadow broker (traynor seems to find more)

If you like Liara, she is great. If you don't, she is very annoying and forced. Fortunately I am in the former 90% of the time.

I just want to say what I've said many times before, Pre-ME3 I liked Liara, my Shep considered her a friend. Then ME3 hits and well I've always been this way but If I feel like something is being forced on me and what not well I just despise it and don't want anything to do with it anymore.

That's Liara for me now, don't want much to do with her, she felt forced and like she was being pushed my way too hard and too forceful.

I felt that BW should and really there is no reason they didn't put as much effort into the ME2 LI's along with Ash in ME3. Instead we got T'Soni Effect, and all those promises BW made about curing Thane, Samara as full LI/Romance, Several endings, Rachni role in ME3, Miranda, her dad's half @ssed role in ME3, Jacob T. as a LI, Kelly with a bigger role, and all those other things, All felt like they were thrown away in the sake of shoehorning us into a romance with either Liara or VS.

Also don't give me the BS about Jacob not being well liked, I remember pre-ME3 many many people hated Grunt and called him a sorry attempt at being a Wrex wanna be, now after ME3 Grunt's a fan favorite just with his small role, and hell it's from one freaking scene where he had that show down with the Reaper-Rachni. SO don't tell me that a character isn't well liked, also if we want to go that route how about Liara Before ME3 Liara already had more hate than any other ME character.

This thread proves that remains true. I personal am indifferent to Liara, much like I am with Tali, but then I think Tali was forced on me since ME1, so I now lump Liara and Tali in their own little area of how I see them, I'm indifferent, I am stuck with them even If I don't want them I got them, So I take them and I really just ok yeah indifferent I could care a less about them really, each one has their great moments.

At this point Liara's kinda become like the bitter Ex-Lover in MY Sheps story (I romanced her in ME1 dumped her on Illium and then again in LotSB, and again in ME3) and she gets all snoty with Samara "Justicar what brings you here? I bet it's a personal score" or however she said that snide comment to Samara, Oh yeah Liara I love you for being the bitter Ex-Lover who is just bitter that I fell in love with Samara. Liara shall provide me many great friction between her and Samara in my Fanfics, I'm gonna enjoy writing her and what I have been planing since chapter 1 of breaking points with why my Shep don't have any emotional attachment to his memories of Liara.

Read the Liara thread from the start. All your questions are answered there.

Liara likes people who do their own research instead of begging to be spoon-fed.

I completely agree. I feel that Bioware implemented Liara in a poor way leaving her to be "The most satisfying" option to choose from everyone else. Also for being the Shadow Broker, Liara was quite useless throughout the entire game =/, which Idk why she was.

I kinda wish I had the Old Liara back, you know the one that looked up at her Commander, shy, still had subtle childish traces in her personality.
ME2 Liara...well that was alright, given she did develop a bond of respect and sees Shepard as a very admirable individual. I could understand why she'd be so cold and focused in finding the Shadow Broker. But after that mission we really didn't see too much of her so we didn't know fully what to expect of her in ME3.

That's just my opinon

Liara says to Samara "I presume you're here on your own, Justicar, perhaps for something special?"

How is that catty or snotty?  It's a good assumption that a Justicar would be working alone, and if at an Ardat Yakshi monastery then indeed it would be another good assumption that it is for something special.  I think the term for what you are experiencing is 'projection'; you see Liara as snotty and so interpret what she says as such, regardless of context/content.  I personally saw her dialogue as respectful, and that she has an uderstanding of the Justicars.

ME1 she is young, vulnerable, inquisitive, pretty, reserved, intelligent but regardless of her shyness finds the courage to express her interest in Shepard in a clumsy, humorous and endearing way.  "Goddess, how could I be so dense?"  The conversations with her about her mother/Saren/asari culture are interesting and her views on humanity.  This is what first drew me to Liara.  And her pink freckles.

For ME2 and ME3, I still have that Liara in mind and she does still show it from time to time with a furtive smile or wry comment.  She still has trouble with Shep's sense of humour as shown when on Mars and Shep says of Liara visiting her on Earth, "I would have liked that, but under the circumstances, I'm willing to forgive you"  She knows Shep is joking, but still doesn't know what to do with it.

Of course she will have matured over the games to some extent, but I don't think she is that different, she just has focus and a definite aim.
