Hi all!
I'm finally feeling pretty confident on Silver and I really want to try out Gold, but reading here has scared me a bit. I have a mic but don't really use it (haven't had the need to, really, plus shy). Are there any tips you could give me? Want to take in my Turian Sentinel, but would it be better to wait until I have some higher level weapons? I'd just hate to get into it only to be a huge weak link (some people seem to take it a lot more servously than others - I got chewed out over the mic for playing a FBWG Silver). Any tips would be geat (good maps/enemies to start with).
Thanks!

Turian Sentinel is a good support class on Gold. You can use him with the Mattock or GPS. Infiltrator + Widow or Claymore is good. Adepts with the Carnifex or Paladin are also fine.

I would suggest maxing out your common weapons first. And some Uncommons.

And don't be scared of Gold. It isn't some impossible task. Add people from the board to show you the ropes. Once you get used to it you will wonder how you ever had trouble on Silver.

Have fun.

It's not that a big a deal. Try gold and you can pretty easily figure out what's good for you. There isn't much beyond knowing the map and knowing how and where to move to when you're under fire. Turian Sentinel isn't typically considered a strong killing character for gold, but that might also depend on your build.
And if people chew you out...who cares.

What's the best way to get into gold? I imagine "jumping into random gold lobbies" isn't it.

Just don't stand out in the open, follow your team, and be on point with objectives. Gold isn't a whole different ballgame from Silver.

I'd say the most significant difference aside from increased enemy damage and health is that boss enemies will never "run out" of spawns as they can do on Silver games during objective waves. Oh, and the 100% shield gate.

Bottom line: if you think Silver is too easy or not challenging enough, you might be ready to try Gold.

Well there's nothing wrong with that at all. But if you don't want to do that then setup private matches with people from this board. Then you will have nothing to worry about.

You can try Gold, providing people don't kick you out because your N7 level is "only" 300 or so. Or because your Carnifex isn't level X yet...

I use my carnifex with my turian sentinel. I would suggest cerberus first and a big open location too (giant, dagger, white). Also stay in cover, you don't have to be glued to a wall but peak around them to see what's around the corner first before you go blindly in a turret and get killed within a second! If you need a build for your turian sentinel, let me know and I can suggest the one I use all the time.

There have been a couple of threads with tips for new gold players (tablet is not kind for linking), try a quick search for gold tips. You could also put whether you play on console or pc and likely make some friends willing to give advice, build suggestions, and to show you the ropes. I personally play mostly gold against either Reapers or Cerberus on the 360. Met some great players from this site that gave me tips and I enjoy being able to do the same when possible. If you are on 360, my gamertag is same as my username so send a message.

Don't be ImaginaryBlue.

ME: Why'd you run off by yourself?
ImaginaryBlue: I got bored. Can you revive me? (across the map)
ME: No. Use a Medi-Gel.
ImaginaryBlue: Don't wanna.
ME: Gah.

ImaginaryBlue: Oops, I'm dead.
ME: Why'd you run off by yourself?
ImaginaryBlue: John Rambo runs off by himself (ACTUAL QUOTE)
ME: Rambo doesn't die a million times.

ImaginaryBlue: ****, you're good, you can carry us.
ME: Yeah, like the last 3 games.
ImaginaryBlue: So, I haven't beaten Single Player yet.
ME: .......

Well you have a paladin, so that's pretty awesome. I still don't have one of those. If you stick with a power oriented support class your weapon quality doesn't matter too much. Rocking a Turian sentinel and grinding fbwgg should catch you up pretty quick. Just focus on buying veteran packs for a while, until you've upgraded your weapon mods at least. It will also keep you stocked with consumables to make up for your weapon strength.

Bring a level 20 char first time you feel comfortable with and try to be a teamplayer. Stick with the rest of the team and try to die as little as possible (max fitness and armour equipment help). It can really ruin a gold run if you the rest of the team have to spend half the time reviving, especially if you have to run all over the map to find the person you want to revive.

On pc most player seem to have mic but few use it. But it can be good to warn someone about a phantom in the same room and stuff flike that.According to your manifest you have better weapons than a lot of people I see in the gold que.

post on these forums and find people to run with. i think i seen a mentor group somewhere on here. running with good players make all the difference. playing with randoms is like chicken with a train.

Thanks guys! Silly thing to be nervous about I know, but damned if some people tend to rage on and make it seem super intimidating.

As people mentioned, it's good to make sure you have at least a couple of decently levelled weapons- failing that, use a class where you can spam powers.

Random, particularly with people who aren't communicating can be difficult, so maybe join one of the groups from the board where you can friend people who can give you a hand but won't pressure you to use a mic.

Bronze Effect is a group for casual players (see sig!) who mainly just want to have fun and not stress about optimum builds, points, loadouts, time of runs etc. but a lot of us are mainly playing Gold, and doing well, enough that we've started actively helping each other get the Unwavering achievement. I was close to stopping playing MP because I was getting a little bored but since I started playing with people from there instead of randoms games have become a whole hell of a lot more fun, and I got the confidence to go Gold.

The Legion Effect is a group for players specifically looking to play Gold, so maybe have a look there also to see if it might be helpful?

When I started in on gold, my weapons were useless... so I stuck to power spam classes until I got enough scratch to level them up.

I would level up some weapons a bit more, a Turian Sentinel would have a hard time without some more power. You can use an Adept or an Engineer no problem, though. Just slap the Phalanx or the Carnifex.

They will do fine with the paladin. It's more about learning how to survive.

My first gold games were with a Turian Sentinel so would recommend that, also with a Mattock. Find a good team (preferably one with 1 or 2 biotics) and use your powers.

TBH I'd recommend spending more time in Silver, concentrating on buying up Veteran Packs to get some more levels on your guns and mods, and building a stock of consumables.

Either that or use your Human Sentinel instead.

Between your salarian engineer, asari justicar, drell adept, human engineer, and human sentinel you've got several power based classes you could use. I'd suggest buying recruit packs until you have a predator X, then just jump in with some 6/6/6/0/6 builds on power based classes. It's very unlikely that anyone will kick a power class using a predator, so long as the predator is X. The 6 fitness will give you a bit of extra breathing room as you get used to gold, and the credits will help you get the weapons you need for the more weapon oriented classes. Just make sure you fully understand how power combos work.

Personally I suggest skipping vet packs and just focusing on PSPs (once your commons are maxed). A predator is all you need on power based classes until you get your carnifex leveled up to 10. The rare guns dwarf most of the uncommons, so it doesn't really seem worth the effort. Worked for me anyways. That's not to say the uncommons are bad per say, just most of them either have a rare equivalent or a rare weapon that's better, except for assault rifles.
