So Origin just updated to 8.6. And it has caused a problem. Mass Effect 3 doesn't lauch but MassEffect3.exe sits quiet running in the background. (608kb memory usage).

I contacted EA livechat and this was their "solution"

Anshul:
I would suggest that you first try ending the background tasks running on your system. For this please follow the steps listed below – 1. Hold down the Ctrl, Alt, and Delete keys at the same time 2. Click the "Processes" tab. 3. Click on the gray bar in the middle column that says User Name to sort by user name. 4. Do NOT select anything for SYSTEM, LOCAL SERVICE, or NETWORK SERVICE. 5. Click on anything besides EXPLORER and TASKMGR for your User Name or other user names. 6. Click on END PROCESS 7. Repeat these steps until only explorer.exe and taskmgr.exe are open for this user profile.

GENIUS RIGHT. That'll kill my anti-virus, kill my wireless internet, kill my mouse, keyboard and notepad, kill chrome (the way I am contacting them.)

How is that a solution? For me to play my game I need to make my computer unusable. When I told Anshul that his answer was:

Anshul:Okay

I asked him if he was actually gonna be of any help and then he said this:

Anshul:Please try and change the browser

Does this guy even speak basic English? COME ON. This is just insulting.

Maybe share the tip with the rest of us, as he's not nearly the only one with this problem.

Someone says they found a way around this problem. Haven't tried it myself yet but some other people are saying it worked for them.
I just hope this gets fixed in time for us to enjoy this weekend's multiplayer operation :(

I am also having this problem. And it's not just for ME3. I can't play Dead Space 2 either.
8.6 broke more things than it fixed.

EDIT: Shut down the process and tried running ME3 as administrator, and it worked, but took twice as ong to boot up. Also, when starting Origin, it temporarily freezes my entire system! Something is majorly wrong with 8.6 guys...

So, looks like I got the same issue and here is my solution:
1) Kill ME3 process
2) Close Origin.
3) Launch ME3 directly (by using an icon on the desktop, binary in the game directory, etc. but do not launch it via Origin).
4) profit. :)

Clicking on "Joing game" launches it for me.

I did what you said and it worked for me. Used the MassEffect3.exe in the binaries folder and it ran just like always.
Thanks a lot :D

OP, the idiots at EA support told me to do the same thing to fix the EA server not available/ 'online pass' issue that cropped up for me last night. They have absolutely no clue what they are doing, he told me to do that after telling me to do a couple things that are just normal computer maintenance, like clearing my browser cache.

It's possible that ME3 has a conflict with one of your other processes. Just end the chat and try out the solution offered. I've had to do this a few times when the support suggested that I roll back Origin to a previous version.

In any case, if you can start ME3 with minimal processes open, then that means you do have a conflict with something else - you can just reactivate processes until it breaks again, and you'll have an answer.

I tried to uninstall origin when ME3 didn't start. Then it dropped an error that i should shut down the reg.exe before uninstall. In task manager I killed that 'reg.exe" and after that started ME3. Runing like that it is required. Try that maybe it's another solution. Greetings from Hungary!!

Here's a simpler option. Go into the folder on your Computer that houses Origin.
There should be a DLL called "IGO32.dll". Simply rename it to anything (I just stuck a 1 on the end), and it should work again.
Something tells me the launch-failure is due to this file.
