New ships for the next version of the game:

The mothership battle will have a few changes. There will be special reinforcements depending
on the remaining health of the mothership:
  • 75% health: a frigate will spawn.
  • 50% health: a hero of the faction will spawn.
  • 25% health: a cruiser will spawn.
The hero is a special fighter, for now I have Miranda (Alliance - Cerberus), Legion (Geth) and Marauder Shields [smilie]http://social.bioware.com/images/forum/emoticons/grin.png[/smilie](Reaper).

I'm also developing a new game mode, Siege, in which one faction will have to destroy a space station and the other will have to defend it. The space station will act exactly as a mothership, spawning defender fighters and losing health for each spawn and the attacker will have unlimited spawns (only 10 fighters at a time). The defender will have to keep the station save for a certain period of time.

I will try to add at least 4 factions for the next version (Alliance, Cerberus, Geth and Reaper) each with dreadnought, cruiser, frigate, fighter and hero.

Here are some videos of Alliance vs Geth and Alliance vs Turians.
I'm also working in power upgrades, I'm using the same system as Mass Effect 3 in which each power has a total of 6 ranks where ranks 4, 5 and 6 have an alternative upgrade. For example the thanix cannon ranks are as follows:

  • Rank 1:  100 damage, 8 sec cooldown
  • Rank 2: -25% cooldown time
  • Rank 3: +10% damage
  • Rank 4a: +15% damage
  • Rank 4b: DoT of 20% for 3 sec
  • Rank 5a: -30% damage but with an additional shot that will hit another target
  • Rank 5b: +50% damage
  • Rank 6a: +75% damage to armor
  • Rank 6b: +75% damage to shields

I'm doing a lot of changes to improve the game, but I have a lot of work now, hopefully in a month or two I will have a new version to release. The most important changes are the following:

  • Fleet customization: your fleet will have 5 different kind of ships and you will be able to choose between them:
    • Dreadnought: This is the main ship of your fleet, the command center, if this ship is destroyed then you loose the fight. This ship is massive and can spawn the other ships of your fleet.
    • Cruiser: This are large ships with a sustancial fire power and resistance, but slow speed.
    • Frigate: Medium size ships equiped with rapid fire weapons.
    • Fighter: Small ships but very fast and very powerful in large numbers.
    • Hero: This is a special fighter with improved resistance and fire power.
  • At the start of the game, most of the ships will be locked and you'll have to progress in the game to earn credits to buy packs in the store and unlock all the ships and equipment.
  • You will be able to use some equipment to improve the stats of your fleet (I'm still thinking about the details).
  • You will pilot a special fighter that can be customized (appearance) and it's equiped with 4 powers. With each fight you will earn experience point and you will be able to upgrade your powers. There are different fighters, each of them with a different set of powers.

Any new ideas or feedback are welcome.

Here is a video of the customization features available in v0.9 and a gameplay. The first video shows the appearance customization, store, powers and fleet and the second shows a gameplay of platinum difficulty in the new nebula 2 map with fog and lightning effects.

I'm still balancing a bit the gameplay but it is almost finished so the release is expected for the next weekend.

Finally the new version v0.9 is now available to download here.

I hope you like the new features of the game and enjoy it.

The main changes of this new version are the following:

-A ship destroyed cannot be locked anymore.

-Special unit spawns at certain points during the battle.

-Added new ships: reaper destroyer, cerberus frigate, alliance dreadnought, geth dreadnought, turian fighter, Miranda, Legion, Marauder Shields...

-Added defense piercing property to guns. Now the total defense of a ship will be Defense * (1 - Piercing).

-Added store in which you can spent the credits earned during the game.

-Added consumables.

-Added fleet customization.

-Added power upgrades.

-Ship and fleet level up.

-Different difficulty levels available.

-Now you can choose the enemy faction.

 

It also includes the Vehicle Editor v0.92:

-Fixed the position property in guns and turrets, now it is properly scaled.

-Fixed the case sensitive issue in the file loader.

-Fixed the absolute path in lens flares.

-Added defense piercing property to guns.

-Adapted to support new features of the game.

 

And the two tutorials for creating new ships.

Looks really cool! Epic music too. Can’t wait to try a demo :)

Two suggestions:

1. Nix the sounds in space :)
2. Huge thanix lances from the Reapers and maybe fire from allied ships too, so you have to try to fly avoiding directly in front of them.

Have only sounds you'd hear from your ship because you're inside it.  Rumble from thrusters, explosions and bumping/collision.  AND OMG I ONLY DISCOVERED THIS THREAD AFTER HOURS OF DERPIN ABOUT THE FORUMS

 

people would pay <10 USD for this!  wow!  awesome!  you peeps are serious!

 

Looking at recent footage.  The explosion effects are fine for a free game, and remind me of 90s Star Fox.  That could be a selling point for you, a 1990s Mass Effect Game

Using only sounds from the interior of the ships and command dialogues will be the correct way of implementing a void space ambient, however, sometimes it is better in my opinion to sacrifice some reality in order to benefit a proper combat experience with explosion and gun fire sounds that will provide a sense of danger all around you. It will be a good idea to include a config option to enable or disable the sound from outside the ship

 

The explosion effect is just a sprite so it isn't very complex, but I intended to improve it some time with a more complex particle system or even with a model fracture system that will break the ship in different parts.

 

I'm working in the next version of the game with the help of VinBron who is providing more ships to the game and improved the gun sounds.

Currently added to next version:

-Fixed the store bug of the previous version (look here for how to fix it).

-Added new ships.

-Improved gun sound.

-Added support for playing music. Including music made by Iclonic.

-Ship collision shape improved (Added convex decomposition and compound shapes).

-Added new maps: citadel, collector base

-Omega map improved (changed the 2D station for a real 3D model)

 

WIP:

-Improve AI

-Add more powers and consumables.

-Add siege game mode: assault a space station or defend it.

 

In this video you can see some of the progress (new gun sounds and new maps).

The next version v1.0 is almost finished and will include a lot of new features:

-Heroes now can use powers.
-Fixed some memory leaks.
-Added new powers: homing missiles, disruptor canon and assuming control (for reapers).
-Added power combination explosions.
-Added dynamic lights and shot impacts.

-Improved performance.

-Now unlocked ships are stored in a separated file (this will allow to add new ships more easily).

-Added tactical control of the fleet: order a ship to attack another.

-Added siege game mode: assault a space station.

 

The most important addition are the tactical screen and the new siege game mode.

The tactical screen will allow you to take control of your fleet by giving orders to your ships:

In the new siege game mode your dreadnought will move toward a space station. The primary objective is to reach the station. The station has several heavy turrets that will cause a lot of damage to the dreadnought when it is in range, so your secondary objective is to destroy those turrets, by doing so your dreadnought will be able to move a bit faster.

Next version features:

The new version v1.0 is now available for download!!!

This new version includes new maps and ships and features the new siege game mode and the tactical screen that will allow you to control the battlefield by giving orders to your fleet.
It also includes the new cockpit view for alliance, cerberus and turian fighters thanks to VinBron.

Finally the new version v1.1 is available for download. After almost 2 years I finally managed to finish the v1.1.

It includes the new escort the freighter game mode, arcturus station (provided by Phoenix Interactive) and improved control and performance. Now you can select between joystick/gamepad or keyboard+mouse. Mouse control has been improved by implementing a relative mouse movement so no more mouse relocating when performing long turns. It also includes larger scale battles in dreadnought battle game mode with up to 4 dreadnoughts per faction.

 

 
Hope you like the new version and if you find bugs, something that can be improved or any doubt regarding the game please let me know.
 
Change log:

-Improved performance.

-More than one dreadnought at a time (1 in bronze, 2 in silver, 3 in gold and 4 in platinum).

-Now frigates, heroes and cruisers appear at 75%, 50% and 25% remaining health of the first dreadnought, so they will appear earlier during battle in higher difficulties.

-Improved KB+M control. Added relative mouse movement

-Reduced the speed of ships to half so it is easier to control the ships (like the initial versions of the game).

-Escort the freighter redone: you alone will have to escort a freighter, every 30 sec new enemy ships spawn at random location around the freighter. The freighter must reach a target point before it's destroyed.

-New maps (simple retexture of the surface map, yeah I'm that lazy :P).

-Improved shadows (using cascade shadow maps).

-Improved tactical orders, now if you order a ship to attack another, it will keep that target until it is destroyed. Very useful for cruisers and dreadnoughts.

-Fixed some visual glitches in laser shots, like the reaper beams, where the shot looks discontinuous.

-Now dreadnoughts face each other at the start of the game.

-Added scripted camera movement at the start of the game showing both ally and enemy fleets.

-Improved joystick control (up to 6 axis, 6 sliders, 1 POV and 12 buttons).

-Increased FOV from 45º to 60º.

-Destroyed ships will spin uncontrolled.

-Improved explosions.

-Added speed boost feature.

-Improved performance in multicore systems.

-Added an option to alternate between joystick/gamepad and keyboard+mouse.

-Fully adjustable speed (No more 50% speed auto adjust).

-Fixed shader issue of version 1.0.

-No more resource loading freezes during battles.

-Powers cannot be used any longer after being destroyed.

-Added directional damage modifier. Increased rear damage and decreased frontal damage.

-Now dreadnoughts can't damage fighters (dreadnought's turrets still can). It was really annoying to be destroyed as soon as the ship spawn.

-Added Arcturus Station map.
