*Post may contain awestruckness about my personal experiences in the series.*

Hey there,

I just played the story mode again (bla bla how can you endure it nag nag horrible ending, yabbidyjab) and some thought came up, which I already had the first time I completed the last game of the trilogy: Poor Garrus.

What do I mean? First off, my squad since ME 1 has always been Ash* and Garrus. I just love the good-cop-bad-cop-dynamic between my Parashep and Ash, while Garrus usually supports the side that speaks to his very individual moral views (most of them I strongly share). That being said, we were a pretty cool bunch.

But Ash wasn't there for everything. As I said, I can understand why she would distrust Shepard, circumstances put her in a place, where everything I do or am seems, at the very least, suspicious. And even though I like her (even more so my character) these constant "Aww come on! It's not what it looks like! If you would just listen to me for one second!!" I had racing through my head,  started annoying me, her position granted or not. I went through hell to get back to you, and I just wanted a kiss. Sleep with a gun, but at least on the SR-2. Like seriously, girl. Oh yeah, walk away.

But here is Garrus. Garrus was there for everything. And he had my back. He trusted me, and for my Shepard, Garrus is my best friend and my wingman. Aside from that, what I like best about Garrus, is that he's also refreshingly not stupid, nor naive and or even dependent in spite of this. I sometimes get the feeling, his basic role in the franchise is to be the one guy on the ship that doesn't suck. Ever. He trusts you because he sees things through, not because he can't think for himself - and even with this lack of conflict between him and Shepard, his character is still never boring (well, ME2 calibrated it's moments...).

However, the reason why he's never boring, is the reason I started this thread: Do you realize, just how many plots Garrus has to his character, that are mentioned in conversation but never really get solved or properly adressed?

The Archangel thing is great, but I'd have loved to have a lot more context to it. And it seems like it's forgotten rather quickly. I mean, he was Omega' Robin Hood, one could've built a lot more from that. His personal quest basically just ties a loose end, but still there could be so much more to it.
Then there's the email log between Garrus and his sister (from the Shadow Broker dossiers), regarding his efforts to get their mother proper medical attention for some serious illness she appearently suffers from. Then there is his background, not only as a C-Sec officer, but the dossier also mentions he was a turian general once. Shrug?

I guess what I'm saying is, Garrus deserved to be the center of attention for a moment, and if it's just for being your buddy throughout all this mess. Liara is a horrible Shadowbroker, after all.**

Thoughts?

* (Okay, just to quickly shoot this down, Ash is not racist or simple-minded, she has fine reasons for everything
she says and will visibly evolve as a character even throughout ME1 if
only you just give a damn. Meaning, she actually is a character. )

**That sentence solely served comedic intentions. Doesn't mean I don't like her. She just getsshoved in your face  too much. But that has been adressed enough in these forums.

The Garrus of ME1 was willing to risk innocents to catch bad guys and had daddy issues. Didn't do it for me.

I like how Shadowbroker files said, that Garrus will never fully develop in Shepard's shadow. Thought in ME3 there will be time to either keep him as "wing-man", or let him go his own way (kinda like I told Keidan to work away from Normandy). Sadly, this is never brought up.

Liked the way writers treated his father - I imagined Garrus telling his old father all he knew, with oldman just nodding and listening.

Would love to see "Garrus- the early years", showing his time in C-Sec, with a Noir feel. Can you imagine those long shadows, Keeners voice acting, sky-car chases...but nope, gonna have anime about James.

Thank you John Dombrow for writing great bits of Garrus for ME3 !

Yea.. the Anime thing kinda threw me for a loop.. Why him?  James could be interesting *shrug* but I think a story about Garrus before C-Sec or even during the time Shepard's in 'time-out' would be awesome.

Agree OP. Garrus was one of the stronger characters, with definite growth and moral struggle throughout the games. I was really disheartened that the squad mates really got such limited screen time in ME3. The ship banter was absolutely amazing, but in terms of further exploring relationships between the characters, it all got a bit pushed to the side. Truly hoping that Bioware has considered introducing some character expanding DLC in the future.

I know something official might be more appealing, but would you mind a fanfic suggestion?

I can say that this is quite possibly the best written work I've ever read, and I'm an avid reader of hard science fiction, so I don't mean that lightly.

It follows Garrus during his period on Omega as Archangel; beautifully crafted action scenes, amazing character development (it's not simply 'Garrus is a badass, etc etc'), and real devotion to lore.

I can't praise it enough, and I'm sorry if you're not into fanfiction, but give the first chapter a shot; it's absolutely worth your time.
