I am playing ME1 again as a Femshep Adept, LI will be Liara for ME2 import and wonder what optional side quests are worth doing, either for the adventure itself, or for affecting my ME2/3 imports.  Please share what side quests you recommend for either reason above, or for your own reasons.

I'd say all of them as I'm a completionist. But there's also the benefits you get from importing characters above level 50 or 55 into ME2. The collection ones can end up being a bit of a pain to finish though: as minerals on the planets surfaces aren't marked. As for which ones effect the ME2 story directly: most do in one way or another, even if only through mentioning, but I believe the ME wiki has a list of those if I'm not mistaken.

As for a personal favourite: once you get a high enough level the Geth incursion is a good way to farm XP and equipment providing you have Tali with the sabotage ability and such.

Thanks for the info. I'm not sure I want to go completionist, but may try get to at least level 50 or 55 if that is possible in one play through.

That is a completionist run: 58 is my highest level on one run.

Will I lose out on side quests if I don't do them in a particular order?

Unlike ME2 you can't carry on the game after the final mission. The game just finishes so anything you haven't done by then is gone. I'm not sure about the possibility of doing Wrex's armour mission after Virmire but if you end up having to kill Wrex on Virmire because you didn't get his armour then I guess that's that. You can still go to the planet before going off to Ilos, and probably you can kill the guys who have it and maybe even get a message saying that you've found some old Krogan armour, but I imagine the game will leave that sidequest as open if Wrex isn't alive to receive it. Oh, and there are two morality based missions that you won't get at all until your paragon or renegade scores are high enough, and it's so high that you might only actually get one anyway.

Other than that I'd say just do them in an order that makes sense to you story-wise but I'd get all or nearly all done by the time you visit Virmire, because the story's really coming to a conclusion quite quickly after that. You can visit as many places (apart from the Citadel) as you like between Virmire and Ilos, but since after virmire all the talk is about how urgent it is to get to Ilos it seems to fit the story better if you don't hang around.

And I'd do everything as well, especially if I want to get as high a level as I can. Subsequent playthroughs with the same character I tend to skip a lot of the Mako exploration and mineral/artifact collecting in favour of the planet's real mission/assignment.

I suggest visist every planet for every possbile missions! Most of the side quest, which partially effect the main story will be and mjust be solved. Like Parsini, Conrad Verner, Tali pilgrimage. I can beat the game around 25 hours on Insanity. Of course I know every part, dialogues, choices in the game. I played as a 100% Paragon and 100% Renegade. You will encounter more NPCs in ME2, if you are Paragon or at least you don't shoot, kill everyone in your way.

Just make sure you talk enough with your squad mates, make Wrex's, Garrus's, Tali's "royalitiy mission" before Virmire.

My usual playthroguh is that about the main story:
Eden Prime-Citadel -> Artemis Tau -> Luna -> X57 -> Pinnacle Station -> Noveria -> Feros -> Virmire
After Feros I'm start to make all possible side quests. The mineral hungting is a nightmare, but you can complete that too just scanning planets, if your radar pick up one on a planet. Simply don't go hunt for minerals, just scan which pop-ups your radar, it will be enough! Oh, and revisit Citadel after each main missions: Artemis Tau, Feros, Noveria, Virmire.

Fun Fact. The Cerberus side quests are mentioned (as are a few others) in a ME 2 playthrough when a ME 1 character is imported. I also liked the Rachni ones as well. I guess I could make a list of missions that actually have an effect on ME 2 and ME 3 if someone wants it

If it's not too much trouble, I'd like that.

No trouble at all. I'm playing through Mass Effect 1 anyway and was going to look through them and make a new checklist of the ones I wanna do. The list below are all the side quests that have a barring on the two following games. I might have missed a few but here's most of them that I'm aware of.

-Bring Down the Sky
-UNC Rogue VI
-Citadel Keeper Scanning
-Geth Incursion (great way to get XP)
-Garrus/Wrex/Tali quests (Tali's is a couple lines of dialogue at the end of Geth Incursion)
-UNC Major Kyle
-Citadel Consort
-Citadel Rita's Sister
-UNC Hostile Takeover
-UNC one with Nassana's sister (cant remember the name of it)

Like others have said I recommend doing all of them since it boosts your level and gives you ME2 mentions but those are usually my personal favorites out of the side quests
