I really do think Bioware completely screwed up the squad in Mass Effect 3

If i'm honest, I find Biowares choice of squad members in Mass Effect 3 quite suprising. I can understand Garrus and Tali, and I would have been suprised if they weren't there. Liara and the VS also make sense.

However, I just can't get my head around why they chose to include James Vega and EDI as a squad member. I also don't understand why they made Javik a DLC char.

Let me elaborate: James was there for new players, and was a big meaty tank person. I think grunt could have easily filled his role. Same class and powers, same wepons, he knows reletively little about the galaxy (having only been born about a year ago) and he's a Krogan! I really did miss our Krogan squad member this game, because I thought it was somewhat of a tradition to always have one.

EDI getting a body made absolutely no sense to me. Maybe it was just because they needed a tech specialist who is garrunteed to be alive, but I still think it's stupid. Why not have a Salarian? Or if they insisted on a robot, why not Legion? If they just wanted a sexy lady companion, why not Miranda? An established and well loved character who was one of the most romanced chars in the franchise (as far as i'm aware)

There was also no vanguard class, unless you bought Javik, but he wasn't really a vanguard. No combat abilities, and no shotgun. I would have had Jack or Thane (obviously with a quest involving you curing him)

So, as for my squad? Well I would have had the VS and Miranda join you right at the start, unlocking Liara and Garrus as you do in the actual game. I would have Grunt recruited at the Rachni mission, and a Salarian engineer of some kind recruited at Sur'Kesh. A cure for Thane would be found and he would join your squad on the citadel. The last recruit would be Tali, who would be recruited as normal. I don't know where Javik would be recruited, proberbly around the same time as Grunt.

I also do realise that many of the characters may be dead, however Miranda was nearly impossible to kill, and no one I know lost Garrus, Tali or Grunt. Even if Garrus, Tali, Miranda, Grunt and Thane are all dead, you would still have a Salarian, Liara , the VS and Javik.

Please post your thoughts and opinions :)

I wish EDI was not a squad-member and instead gota Batarian who is still pissed about Shepard blowing up a Batarian colony and was forced to work with him/her because of Balak.

Of course only recruitable if you don't kill Balak.

Yes! That's another great idea! He could also be our diffault soldier if Ashly and Grunt are dead! Maybe even make him Balak himself...

Vega was there for the silly people who are into Jersey Shore.  Grunt would have been a VASTLY superior choice.

EDI was given a body so Joker could have an LI.  They were interacting and bickering and jibbing each other in ME2 as if they were an item as it was...but then EDI was just a golf ball on a tee then.  I was expecting that perhaps she would get a projected image like the VI asari chicks on the Citadel, basically her physical body in ME3 but in projected form.  Vast improvement over the golfball-tee shape.  I didn't mind so much her getting a physical body either.  Vega and that horror (Chobot) were rotten choices, however.  What were they THINKING?  They WEREN'T.  Chobot got in for licking a game.  Vega brings in the braindead crowd (Jersey Shore and other "reality TV" fans).

Javik was PAID FOR DLC for the simple reason of getting money.  It was a zero day DLC and you had to PAY .  Do the math.

I kind of wish we got at least one of the Mass Effect 2 squad mates too. I like Javik though.

I agree. And i really did like Javik, i thought the whole idea of the Protheans in fact being all imperialist and evil was a very good twist, and one I really do like. I loved Javik as a character, and I will proudly say that even though everyone else seems to hate him.

That's probably one of my biggest reasons for hating Vega. And I didn't like Javik being 1st day DLC, but i still liked the character ^_^

Probably would have replaced EDI with Miranda and Vega with Grunt, myself, and left the squad with the same number of people. I don't mind Vega, but introducing new squadmates in the last part of a trilogy doesn't make sense to me. I also don't mind EDI having a body, but bringing her along on missions always felt odd. I mean... wouldn't Shepard worry about what impact it would have back on the ship if EDI's body is destroyed? And what happens if the Normandy is forced to move out of range? Doesn't seem very well thought out to me.

The only issues with my ideal squad would be: A) How do we introduce Miranda on Earth, and B) Who (if anyone) do we have in her place, even if just for Earth, if the player did get her killed?

Grunt I'd have us pick up on the Citadel, by the way, not on the Rachni mission. It would be simple enough to come up with a reason for him to be there, and that way we'd have Miranda (tech-biotic combo) and Grunt (soldier) to fill in for whichever VS is in the hospital.

Squad was too small imo and there should have been at least one of the ME2 exclusive characters on the team. Squad didn't really have the diversity and ability to have a team that reflected your Shep as occurred in ME2. Guess that's because they auto-dialogued and canonised Shep so he/she was for long periods no longer our character.

Vega doesn't work for me as babysitting the new dull Jenkins at the climax of a galactic war isn't something my Shep would want to priortise. He wants people he trusts and can rely on or who have taken them on before such as Javik.

Tela Vasir as a possible squad member, the council could force Vasir to work with Shepard.
Also Jondum Bau as another possability.

I like that the ME3 squad is smaller, and I'm happy that they brought the ME1 squad back (which I always preferred) but I wish we had at least 1-2 members of the ME2 squad. I was looking forward to seeing some of the ME2 squad get to work with the ME1 squad.

Miranda was sorely missed, because I had a decided lack of people who could do overload and use biotics. If she was on my squad, I think i would have been bringing her along with Ash all the time. Which hopefully would have led to some snarky comments, becuase I don't think the two would get along very well.

Am I remembering incorrectly - or didn't we kill her in Lair of the Shadow Broker.

Usually being dead makes it difficult to continue working as a Spectre. Shepard is someting of an exception to the rule.

I would have loved to have had Major Kirrahe on my team and as odd as this sounds I wanted to recruit Conrad Vernor to my team. It would also have been cool to have a Batarrian on the team.

Javik was great. Vega was good. EDI was decent.

Either way, it wasn't as bad, seeing as you still had the fan favs like Garrus, Tali, and Liara.

So no biggie for me.

I personally found the ME2 squad a much livelier, more diverse bunch.... I was actually hoping for quite a few squad mates.... maybe even up to 12???? Still gutted Miranda, Mordin and Thane weren't squad mates.... Didn't really mind James, he was just kind of "there".... And I personally adored EDI...

I liked the ME3 squad, but I can see why others had issues. IMO, it was a mistake to introduce so many new characters in ME2 when there was no feasible way for them all to join you again in ME3. Just another example of Bioware not planning things out properly.

I liked their reasoning for keeping the squad smaller in ME3: So that it would be easier to provide quality interaction with them.

Too bad they didn't really deliver on that. What we got was a smaller squad than ME2, but with loads of auto-dialouge and relatively little chance for real, in depth conversations with choices.

Javik, despite being a DLC character introduced only in ME3, has more "real" conversations on the ship than Ash, who has been a character since the first game. He also actually gets to move around the ship. Facts that annoy me greatly.

Well I can see why the ME2 crew didn't rejoin up after all we didn't see the hearing that took place that grounded Shepard and removed his/her rank and placed Shepard at a desk for 18 months. But it still would have been nice while out an about gathering support to be able to ask some of them the option to rejoin the crew.

This was my biggest issue with ME3. It was absolutly ridiculous to introduce so many new characters in ME2 and then not bring a single one back as a permanent squadmate for ME3. Lazy and poorly planned and really hindered the ME3 experience.

My only problem with the ME3 squad is that there's no ME2 only member on it, I can see it being a nightmare trying to pick one but I have an elegant solution to arrive at the ideal choice.

They gave us Vega who is a soldier, this overlaps with Ashley who is also a soldier therefore to be fair they should have also added Miranda who is a sentinel just like Kaidan.

This. The fact that they didn't deliver on the squad interactions is my biggest problem. This is just another lesson learned for me though. I'll never take BioWare at its word ever again.

You think they should add 2 or 3 characters in Mass Effect 3?
