I really do think Bioware completely screwed up the squad in Mass Effect 3

I actually really liked the squad in ME3. Vega was probably an odd choice, but Javik was hilarious. I think the whole point of having a small cast was that they could include more dialog per character, which worked out quite well when compared to the first two games. I also like how the squad would play off one another, even when you're just in the Normandy.

My one gripe was with the dialog, though. I understand that there was a metric **** tonne of lines in ME3 'cause of all the variables from the first two, but I really didn't like how the dialog wheel got simplified and half the conversations became those ambient ones where the camera doesn't even change. And I wish that your LI acted more like your LI... Like in ME2 how you could call them up to your room and stuff.

Meh. I was indifferent about Vega (didn't take him along very often though), but I don't hate him as much as some. Sure he's a meathead, but it's the military ... there's gonna be a few of those. Making EDI a squadmate was stupid though.
Mordin would have been cool but I liked his role as it was ... and his death was well-done. Same with Thane, actually -- I would have loved him as a squaddie, but his role in ME3 actually *doesn't* ****** me off.
What I think would have been cool/interesting:
1. You get Tali OR Legion depending on your decision with the geth/quarian conflict (or both, but make it a lot harder to resolve the conflict).
2. Add Miranda as a recruitable squadmate (hell, throw in a side-quest to recruit her ... god knows the game needed more content). If Kaidan is your VS, you still have Vega to fill the soldier role, but if Ashley is the VS, there's no sentinel. Miranda is one of the hardest people to get killed in ME2, and I'd wager she's alive in most people's playthroughs (except maybe the hardcore Jackmancers).
3. Add side missions ala LotSB for ME2 squaddies -- if they survived your suicide mission, you get to play through the missions and gain war assets. If you got them killed ... your loss. I'm willing to bet most people who didn't get to do a mission because someone was dead would make a new playthrough so they could experience the full game.
4. Set a default status for ME2 squadmates at the start of the game for non-imports. People who are new to the series probably wouldn't be as butthurt as BioWare thinks ... and, if they got really into it, they might (gasp) go buy ME2 to experience the full story.

Finally someone agrees. The squad just sucks in this game. You should be able to cure Thane, get Grunt (like what the hell does he do after Arlack company is dead?), Miranda (after you help her sister she has NOTHING to do), and I really don't think that Legion dying no matter what is a very good idea. I think when you choose between Geth/Quarians you're basically choosing between Legion/Tali squadmate-wise.

There's only so many writers you want to have working on this thing. The writing is like programming; throwing more writers at the problem won't get it done faster and better. And there was a tremendous amount of writing in this game.

The choice was between a smaller squad with more banter and dialog, and a larger one where only a single character in any given mission has significant lines (as in ME2).

I think I prefer the ME3 style. Plus all the characters are a lot of fun.

I might even let Mordin die at some point so I can experience Paddok Wiks first hand. :D

Given that the only guaranteed squadmates that are alive in ME3 are the Virmire survivor and Liara, they had to add new squadmates for people just starting out or importing saves where those people were dead. And even then, it's a pretty sterile experience in comparison according to people that have run with that combo.
