I think duncan is dead mainly because we pretty much saw hit get hit with a battle axe. I disappointed with his role in the game too but he's gone.

But we didnt see him get hit... we saw the axe being swung from his point of view and the screen goes black.

As I've said before, I think Duncan is Purina Darkspawn Chow. If he comes back, I will be sorely disappointed in Bioware.

Why have Duncan come back? Why not have it be his evil twin who infiltrates the Gray Wardens and seduces the PC. Then the twin actually falls for the PC and goes to desperate lengths to make sure his secret is safe. Then the REAL Duncan comes back!

*sigh*

Verra tired of the "but we dinna see the booooodeeeeeeeeeeeee" soap opera memes.

That is my very thin theory.

Yeah, Morrigan said everyone died... but you never see him actually die. She also saw darkspawn dragging survivors under ground.

I believe the darkspawn are holding the top Grey Warden captive, experimenting to figure out how to break the bond between Wardens and themselves so they can properly take over the world.

There will be a big DLC or expansion that will send us to the deep roads to rescue him.

That is why there is no Duncan armor in Return to Ostagard.. he is still wearing it

Holla!!!!!

although i highly doubt it, i am intrigued by the possibility of a dlc like that.

Some say that if you cut a hair in Duncan's beard, two more will take its place.

Even if he returns, the questions remains will he be Duncan the White, or Darth Duncan?

Personally I think they should let the dead rest, though.

I think it is plausible for the darkspawn to want a grey warden in an attempt to break the bond.

A cool mission would be to go into the heart to rescue before they figure it out, to preserve the the Grey Warden secret. He wouldnt be the same, and could die after the rescue or something..

Ha! What fashion of razor could hope to shave perfection, what make of blade could cut the Beard Of Beards? Duncan's Beard would laugh at such ludicrous ideas, if he were to stoop so lowly as to notice them, being as they are the feverish phantasms of a mere mortal's clouded mind!

If we are to believe the darkspawn can turn a dwarf women into the broodmother, its highly possibly to forge a story about Duncan being kept alive for some purpose. As you recall, they can sense Wardens... He was knocked out and not killed, they knew he was a powerful Warden

Part of me thinks the black screen cut was as if it was cutting directly to what was happening in the tower and part of me thinks it is a "Didn't see him die, thus he still alive in some form or other", I reckon he was close to death anyway, he'd just been sent flying by the Ogre and then saw Cailan get snapped in two and flung like a ragdoll and used up most of his remaining energy to run up to and climb up the ogre using his sword and dagger as picks before returning to his king's side and realising all was lost, albeit a small glimmer of hope (the beacon being alight).

Part of me is also hoping for a 'spirit' appearance even if it would be too "Obi-Wan/Yoda"ish, be intriguing if he is there if they put a flag to see if you are visiting it post ep or during game, seeing as post ep has to be classed as taking part between redcliffe and the final battle (due to Morrigan not being in the post ep camp if you didn't do the ritual). Because if it is the former, be neat if during a conversation with him as his spirit is departing he is about to tell you about the 'sacrifice' one of you has to make and if it is post ep, you can get the option of talking to him about it (and maybe mentioning you took the ritual if you did haha)

One thing for certain, I can't see the 'other' warden surviving to the end of the Ostagar quest or they would need to redo the landsmeet scene.

More I think about it though, I can't see them having Duncan returning unless it has already been done and they just didn't implement it or needed to work through some things first. Because he is a key character whom as mentioned above kept something from both you and Alastair.... and that brings me onto the whole "Duncan's Shield" situation. An appearance by Duncan would potentially negate Riordan needing to tell you about the stash.

Closest I foresee to us getting a Duncan appearance in truth is another 'fade' appearance, maybe at the start of a sequel if they go on the decision to allow people to continue with their PC if they lived.

He will make a return in RtO.

As a GHOUL.

Alistair will be forced to kill him and that is opportunity no. 2 to harden him.

And clearly the best way to knock someone out is to hit them in the head with the sharp end of a battleaxe.

Well, they stop moving, for one. Problem is to get them to resume movement at a later date.

So you actually saw the blade side of the axe go into the skull exploding his head into a million pieces?

I missed that scene

He can't be a ghoul - Grey Wardens are immune from the taint, right? Isn't the whole point of becoming one so you can battle them and not get all ghoulied?

Because clearly every emotive death scene must end in a shower of gore, and it's not like we see fron Duncan's perspective the sharp end of the axe coming down on him.

According to Alistair he was near to undergoing the Calling where the taint overcomes Grey Wardens and they gradually become ghouls/some kind of hybrid darkspawn.
It would be possible had he remained alive, however given that the Calling gives Wardens enough time to get themselves to Orzammar and die in glorious battle it isn't a quick process. Might take more than the 2 years the game takes place over.

And let's not forget the axe to the head. Unless there are headless ghouls.

If he wasn't killed then it's possible he's... something else.  Not a ghoul, though.  Technically once a Warden is past their time for their Calling, their immunity wears off, and the taint in their blood spreads, which is why they go to Orzammar to die in battle rather than waiting.

I suspect he may become a Ghoul simply for the eyecare plan. Did you know that Grey Wardens don't get any benefits?

And people wonder why nobody likes them.

And we are discussing a make believe fantasy world with stories of Flying Griffins and Demons turning mages into Abominations are common.

So i am sure it is highly impossible for Duncan to maybe... um duck? He did completely destroy a highly skilled Ser Jory and kill and Ogre by himself

Technically they aren't immune, it's just acting much slower within their bodies, it's also not entirely unprecedented that they'd kidnap a Warden to aid them in finding one of the old gods. BW may keep their options open regarding Duncan, but if we see any DLC regarding him, I guarantee he'll only turn up to die on us immediately after our daunting rescue.

More likely that *if* BW goes the soap opera route, he'll make an appearance in DA2: Beards, in a corrupted, darkspawny form (Which wouldn't be entirely unfathomable, given a few years time).

Not really. Or depends on whether we go with the books or the in game lore.

As per the books, the Grey Wardens exist in a no man's land. They are not immediately affected by it, but they eventually succumb to it. And when they get close, they go to the deep roads to die a heroic death.

There are instances in the book about what happens to Grey Wardens when they do not go to their calling and linger on in the company of Darkspawn and it is not pretty.

Alistair says Duncan had started hearing the "call" and knew it was about time to "retire". He was close to succumbing to the taint. If he survived the attack, he is like 2 hair follicles from being something very sensitive to silverite.

Duncan, exhausted, injured and demoralised kneels over the king's corpse. A horde of darkspawn rush towards them, through clouded eyes he stares at the Alpha defiantly as it sweeps it's axe down on Duncan's head...

.... Duncan ducks and yells "PSYCHE!".

... yeah. Sure. Whatever.

Well, Ser Jory was highly skilled at whining and moaning and little else, and Ogres are fast food for a high level character (That Duncan can be expected to be).
