If it moved the story forward in a thought provoking manner than I would be all for it. If used just as a plot device to elicit sales, not so much. There are so many ways that this story could evolve based on the different choices/endings you make during the game that this does not seem outside the realm of possibility. It obviously would upset some and other would be quite pleased. It is amazing how a video game can garner such fervor. Myself included!!!
You are spot on good sir!
I felt there needed to be a bit more Duncan. Some people dont. He doesnt need to be alive and well, killing darkspawn as a hero, but i guess I didnt like the sudden and abrupt end to a great character like Duncan. Would have liked to see more of him
I am still upset Nihlus didnt last longer in ME.

Back to the topic though ... I read that in RtO we get to go on a quest to delve deeper into Duncan's back story, and I am all for that.
That would be cool... give some closure to Duncan other than an axe to the head

I don't think it's a question of can it be done so much as should it. IMHO, no, it shouldn't. The "ZOMGWTFBBQ I THOUGHT YOU WERE DEAD" plot device is horribly overused.
This.
They'd have to go to pretty strenuous lengths to explain how Duncan survived an axe chop to the head and how he made it off the battlefield even though the front lines were overwhelmed.
The king is dead. Duncan is wounded and exhausted--and weaponless, having left them in the dead ogre. He sees the beacon lit on the tower, but realizes that Loghain isn't there--the Grey Wardens have been betrayed. The GWs are being decimated in front of his eyes. That's a pretty tight spot to get out of.
Somebody upthread mentioned Wynne escaping, but she wasn't on the front lines as the king and GWs were. There was time enough for combatants in the rear to realize that all was lost and to flee. The game itself references people being at the battle and surviving on several occasions--one off the top of my head (aside from Wynne) is the knight in Denerim who recognizes you as a GW, who says he was there and blames you for the death of his friend. So I don't think Wynne's survival proves anything with regard to Duncan.
Besides, I highly doubt that you'll find King Cailan's armor just sitting on the battlefield, waiting for you to come along and pick it up! I wouldn't be surprised if the upcoming DLC was basically a hunt for the various pieces.
Morrigan said she saw Darkspawn dragging surivivors underground. The small possibility Duncan survived, perhaps sensing he is a Warden they spared his life and are currently using him for some dreaded purpose
So what you're saying is this?

I would say I'm not here to impress you, but you'd just approve +8 and say it remains to see what I am here for, and then my husband would walk in, see my blushing ears and take away the computer again....
The long list of things i can pull from this statement
you get a +10 not a +8

I honestly cannot like the guy, personally. I really cannot. He comes across as trying to be the Obi-Wan, but we never saw Obi-Wan stab C-3PO.
It was in the deleted scenes (deemed to disturbing for kids to see), even Obi-Wan can only take to much of Threepio at one time, everyone has their breaking point...

If you make Alistair the king, he's wearing Cailan's gold armor in the epilogue. So either Cailan had two sets and the spare one fit Alistair, they made a whole new set for Alistair in that short a time, or someone got Cailan's armor off the battlefield.

Duncan's Rugged Beard of Blade-Turning
Easily explains how he survived (Good thing it was an axe and not a warhammer).

The screen goes white, not black! White=good, black=bad, so it means that Duncan killed all of those darkspawn. Believe me, I am a professional at interpreting such cinematography, I've taken film lit!
Duncan then removed all of his & Cailin's armor, so he could treat the King's wounds and use his body heat to prevent hypothermia. Then they left for the Deep Roads (D-spawn going one way, Duncan the other) and came out together, somewhere secret & safe.
Get ready for DA: Return of the King!!!!
Hey, didn't you ever hear the phrase "don't go toward the light"?!

So, what I think happened is that he killed this alpha, even though he doesn't have weapons, but then was killed by something else/bleed to death/the alpha killed him but he got the alpha enough to leave it dead as well.
Of course this is all speculation, and I am pretty sure that Duncan is dead, but I don't think that he died with that look on his face, it was not an acceptance of death face, it was a "I'm going to mess you up face"

I took it that after he got his brief second wind from killing the ogre, he may have had some internal bleeding that killed him or at least a mortal wound to the torso.
They set Duncan up as too good of a warrior to sit there as the Hurlock ran up to him and cut his dome off...
