I'd only support this if AAA titles dropped from sixty to fourty dollars or less because of ad support. Leveraging additional money this way, just like day one DLC, DLC that should have been in the game but was cut out only to put it back in, and the like are good examples of non-value added product.

I don't want to pay for the programming that goes into these commercial interruptions.

Thank god for my PC.

Interestingly enough, games already have ads in them; they're just part of the game environment. And that seems like it would be far more effective than actually stopping gameplay.

Hmph, they've been doing it with TV programs from the beginning - the precedent was set long ago, and it will come as no surprise for video games and might not even meet much resistance except from "vocal minorities" and "entitled whiners."

Also, what are these YouTube advertisements people speak of? I have a harsh anti-ad setup on my browser, so pretty much all forms of advertisement get zapped on the spot - perhaps I've not seen YouTube ads because of that.

Popular Youtube vids have ads that play for inbetween 15 to 60 seconds.

And, my point was, why is Sony doing something like this when there are already effective ways to do it?

They aren't necessarily doing it, they're patenting a means to do so. Which means:

a.) They plan on doing it,

b.) They are investigating it and may or may not go through,

c.) They are making the patent so they can sue anyone else who does it.

More than likely it will be changed to where it won't interrupt gameplay per se, but perhaps occur between certain "segments" of gameplay (like in between completing a level or chapter and beginning a new one). Advertisements might appear on title screens, pause menus, and perhaps in-game "billboards" and "radios" and whatnot.

It would fit quite nicely with the "always-online" component people have been talking about, so I think that rumor might have some more truth behind it than I'd like.

This already happens though.

With Metal Gear Solid 4, in between each chapter, the game has to install. Takes about 5-10 minutes, and it's literally just a loading screen. I suppose if more games had to do this, they'd have a decent excuse to put these adds in the game, and it wouldn't be an annoying interference to the game itself.

It'd be more entertaining than watching Snake smoke a cigarette, with a message that tells me I should take a break and smoking is bad.

Lots of sports games, and lots of racing games--games with relatively easily accessible counterparts I think.

The game where it was most obvious to me, was Rainbow Six Vegas 2. If I remember correctly, the game itself (when connected to the internet) would update the billboards to match the most recent games and movies being released.

I saw a billboard for "Get Him to the Greek" when the game came out some time before the movie was announced. I also noticed that different Ubisoft games where being showcased on the MLG Stadium level.

It was pretty cool actually.

I don't play any of those games - as long as it sticks to "popular" games that I never play anyway, then I'll overlook it.

LOL at the Obama campaign ads, though - that is the epitome of lame.

The only games I recall ever playing with ads are the Need for Speed games.

And I agree; gives me one more reason to hate him.

BUT anyway, the point is it's already been done, much more subtly.

Unfortunately, I seriously doubt they would be that unselfish.

I have no problem with this. I just won't buy the games that have in place ads. I'll stick to old games or indie games. Will most people do that? That's the question.

Or better yet how about a Pepsi ad in Battlefield that's screaming in your face "BUY ME".

Aaaaand, oddly enough, I actually--maybe not suppot it, per se, but I can see ads in game if done properly. It adds a ton to the atmosphere, makes it that much more real if the products on the billboards are actually real products and not some fake-looking ad. Adds to the immersion, if you will.

Its probably to offset the cost for free online through psn network. If you bought psn+ (like ign does for there website) the ads will not appear.

Yeah, I saw movie posters for 'Book of Eli' in Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, well after the game was released.

Movies are already rife with product placement, but it won't surprise me if advertisements air between "segments" of movies as well.

lol, well, I bought a new computer last month that can outperform the playstation 4 and xbox 720 judging by their rumored specs, so i wasn't planning on buying them anyway.
