i cannot fathom how sony doesnt think this wont backfire.. the community backlash (if this actually happens) would be so massive they'd be shooting themselves in the foot - people would just flock to microsoft, nintendo and pc and sony's console would be left in the dust.

I'm inclined to believe your optimism because your post contained cats and I love cats. However, I do think things can get worse without making people flee.

Their security scandals didn't even scare people away.

I purposely brought a ps3 because i thought Game would go bust and i had somewhere around 300 quid on my rewards card (was going to use it for the next Xbox).

I'm glad i brought it, The Last of Us looks amazing.  God of War 3, Uncharted 2 and 3 are just boring, i don't see the appeal. Killzone 3 is fun though.

Off-topic, sorry!

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to ridicule PS3 owners here. I am one myself in fact and I got a lot of fun out of my PS3 so far. I'm not the biggest fan of Sony though.

I don't mind ads in sports games in fact it ads immersion into those. I wouldn't mind them in modern themed games either(Grand Theft Auto for instance). However if there are ads akin to YouTube that force you to wait 30,20,15 etc seconds to continue playing or starting your game I would expect a price drop in games to 50 or 45$ at least.

I wonder if they have plans to play ads during lobby intermissions. Instead of a 60second time frame to hear ssji5gohan2232 talk about how badass he was in that last round of MW4 or Halo5 instead they will force people to hear Burger King pitch their new combo meal or remind us about the next season of Dancing with the Stars.

If it's subtle and subliminal, sure I don't mind. Or if it's like Metal Gear Solid 4's beginning where there were "TV shows" that you could flip through, again no big deal.

But a blatant "**** your game, buy our product TODAY!!!" interruption of my experience is something that should really be obvious to these guys as being a very bad idea.

That they think it's a good idea is... well I would say my faith in humanity has diminished further, but that'd be a lie.

There's nothing left of it to diminish.

Alright! I love ads, they're really useful, because the information on them is very informative.

I think they should add an ad everytime I kill an enemy because it'd be difficult for me to keep up with that useful information after each kill. Also, when I step at least 4 steps, an ad needs to remind me of something. It'd be really useful.

YouTube is a free service.

More importantly while there are adds at the beginning the middle adds don't stop the video you are wathcing. Unless I've missed something.

On some channels the video is stopped to play adverts.

I find Ads to be the contributing cause of consumerism, which pretty much ruins everything it touches.

Actully the whole entertainment industry could use a crash, sports, movies, music, games. All of it getting a swift kick to the face, lowering prices, lowering entitlements, might do some good in the long run, like it did for gaming in the 80's.

lol, well, I bought a new computer last month that can outperform the playstation 4 and xbox 720 judging by their rumored specs, so i wasn't planning on buying them anyway.

Why would pc games be exclusively excluded from that. That, plus we are ALL going to see DRM on absolutely everything. For everything.

It's a dumb idea but I'm not going to get too worried until it becomes something more than a patent. All of the big 3 have some really stupid patents that sound horrific but it's not always obvious what the context is that they're going to use them in, if they ever get around to it at all.

It's a subsidized/free game model.

They offer you the option of buying the game at reduced, or even no cost, but you're required to watch the ads while you're playing.

The major problem with it is, much like movies, games depend on pacing and maintaining an emotional state. In any given game, you're given a task and the game attempts to motivate you via in game narrative to want to complete that task. Interrupting the Player during the segment they're attempting to complete will break the suspension of disbelief, pull them out of the game, and ultimately could easily end up with disinvesting (Uninvesting?) the player from the game.

Players won't be focused, because of constant interruptions, and ultimately won't feel the motivation that they would've were they uninterrupted.

I honestly don't see it really going anywhere. TBH, they've got much bigger problems on their hands. Primarily a rising gamer revolt centered around anti-consumer DLC practices and locked content on the discs, because ultimately, platform owners are hurt as badly as everyone else, since they subsidize hardware through games, and gamers ignoring games with anti-consumer DLC and locked content seem to be taking a really harsh beating right now.

Hmm, I haven't seen that - what games are those in?

Lots of sports games, and lots of racing games--games with relatively easily accessible counterparts I think.

Humerously enough, that makes those games -more- realistic. Adds for Pepsi along the stadium walls or in the score box in Madden 13 would increase my immersion.

I don't give a friggin' f*ck about ads. Corporations better keep their sh*t out of my games. Consumerism is already the cancer of capitalist societies as it is. But who am I kidding, there will always be ignorant drones who will keep on buying games like this, no matter how bad it becomes. Some people's 'arguments' in this topic already prove what I detest about gamers nowadays. Gamers don't have to be like dogs wagging their tails to the feet of big capitalist corporations! How far will YOU let it go is entirely dependant of how YOU as a gamer are willing to bow down and let yourself get screwed time upon time again. I, for one, give stuff like this a big 'f*ck you'. I'd rather support small gaming companies with sincere intentions, aka, who are still focused on giving their audience a worthy game with an interesting story and gameplay, like games should be! Do you really want your experience to get ruined by Burger King ads on the loading screen of your game? Do you really want to see your immersion shattered to dust by being forced to watch adds for make-up every damn minute, pausing your game right in the middle of an interesting scene? Do you? Well, I don't! I'm sick of companies screwing over the gaming industry with their blatant mind-boggling and moronic capitalist plans. Leave our games alone, I tell you.

Its like the entire industry is determined to make me hate games.  Funny how I'm still here lovin them.
Not only will I never buy anything from sony but I will never buy anything from anyone who puts there ads on this BS.  These companies are just holding a sign in front of their products that say "insert money here and bend over"  Thats all they expect from us.  We are not human beings we are walking wallets.

Seriously though I'm surprised no one else thought of this.

If they put ads when the game loads, where they have their own company logos now, I'd support it; more money for them that isn't coming from me. But I wouldn't buy a game that had periodic ad breaks, god no.

Seems like it might be an idea for demos though.

Gaming wouldn't exist if companies weren't trying to make money. But half of capitalism is natural consumer demand. Companies best realize that, at their own peril. There will be a supplier of non-DRM and non-ads in games because thers is demand. If these companies wanna play games, a new supplier will step up to meet market demands.

Do they want to play those gimmicks? Go right ahead. History demonstrates an inevitable crash is absolutely garaunteed to occur. Thank goodness in gaming it'll be a clean burn and a fresh start, since no interference from above gets in the way from the natural purge.

It's happened in gaming already, as pointed out before.

@sajji: companies are already making extra money by releasing DLC, collector's items/game editions, toys, and what-not. There are many other options, but in-game ads are a big NO for me.

It is for me, too. Absolutely a no-no for me. It's a vast majority. If they do it, they're gonna shoot themselves in the foot. Demand backlash would be horrific all around.

This one we can cope with. As for ads in general, unless they're ads that are part of the world themselves (Captain Baseball Bat Boy, Nuka Cola, Perseus) then it's a no go.
