So I'm finally playing Awakening for the first time and I just met Nathaniel Howe in the dungeon. (Spoiler question.)
You essentially get to decide whether to conscript him, set him free or kill him. My first instinct was to give him his family's stuff and let him go, then I realized he actually leaves and I lose out on a companion. Then I read online that if you let him go, he later approaches you on the road, asks to undergo the Joining and becomes a Grey Warden anyway (if you say yes). However, I can't find whether he becomes a companion or not if you let him join later instead of conscripting him when you first meet.
So my question is pretty simple: Does Nathaniel become a companion after you let him join of his own voilition later, or do you have to conscript him when you first meet him in the dungeon to have him as a companion?
For role-play purposes, I'd like to send him on his way and have him come crawling back, but if I lose him as an optional companion in that scenario, I might just have to break character and conscript him when I first meet him.

I believe there is an option to have him join in both cases.
And I'd say it was worthwhile to conscript him.

I know there's an option to have him undergo the Joining and become a Grey Warden in both cases, but I would like to know if he becomes a recruitable companion in both cases. Like, can you only recruit him to travel with you if you force him to undergo the Right of Conscription in the dungeon vs he just becomes an NPC that stands around if you let him voluntarily ask to join the Grey Wardens later, or can you have him as a companion both ways?

I've given him his stuff and let him go, and then I run into him on the road later and can recruit him.

All right, I'll give it a try. Thank you both!
