Now, right away I'm sure most of you think it's because of the ending. True, the ending didn't satisfy me at all, but it wasn't the ending that made me want to put the game away and never play it again. Okay. maybe that does have a lot to do with it, but not nearly as much as the rest of the game.
Unlike the previous games, I wasn't hooked from beginning to end. I felt like I was on this small boat in the middle of the ocean during a hellacious storm, rocking back and forth and starting to feel woozy only a few hours in. So, to say I was underwhelmed with the story is a tremendous understatement. It was almost as underwhelming as the Reapers showing up on Earth in the beginning of the game.
Infact, I believe that perfectly describes the game: Underwhelming. But not in the usual sense. Everything has high production values and the dialogue is well written for the most part. But the characters in this one aren't nearly as memorable as in the previous games, combat isn't as fun as it used to be for some reason (still can't put my finger on it), sidequests are nothing more than scanning mini-games (fetching mundane items), and the Galaxy has been reduced to the Citadel... and only the Citadel. No other places to explore, just the Citadel, which, you can fully explore on your second trip there.
Other than spending hours doing mundane fetch quests and main missions, there are the N7 missions. Throughout these missions I felt as if I was playing multiplayer co-op offline and without my buddies. Infact, these missions even use the same multiplayer maps as seen in the online co-op mode. Neddless to say, I was again underwhelmed by the lack of originality in the N7 missions. In ME2, these missions were a great distraction from the main story, and they were all custom made.
Although it was fun trying to dodge the reapers for a bit, the scanning mini-game got boring very quickly. It seemed more like an excuse to not have to make real side quests and give uou the opportunity to really explore the galaxy. Not as bad as the mining mini-game, but just as repetative and tedious and arbitrary.
Combat. Like I said, I'm still trying to figure out why I don't enjoy it as much as ME2. I have some theories, but none of them really satisfy me. In the end, I think it's a combination of the enemy types, level design, awkward animations, and the 'A' button doing almost EVERYTHING that makes me hate it. Dunno for certain.
Anyway, I thought it would be a good idea to type this stuff out after not playing the game for a while. I didn't hate the ending like so many others did. Infact, by the time I got to the end, I was so glad that the experience was about to wrap up that I couldn't care less about the end at the time.
I think I'll replay the game when BioWare releases their extended cut DLC. Of course, it all depends on what exactly that entails. We'll see.
I'd like to get some feedback from you guys on some of the aspects of the game that I brought up, and if you wish to add to it, feel free.
