Hey everyone! I'm new to this fanfic stuff, but I've already got one started, though it's not uploaded yet. Figured I'd stop in and say hello.

Also, have to ask a question. In my story, it pertains to a squad of Quarian marines... From your point of view, being more experienced then mine, should I put the "x vas y" naming thing, or not? I remember in ME2, Kal'Reegar (the only Quarian marine that I know of) didn't have a "vas" so.... :pinched:

Also, been watching this for a bit of the day, read some of your fanfics, waiting until I could post (pesky 24 hour wait time...) and they seemed real good :D

It's a bit confusing. What else would we talk about if we're not saying something about something to someone? :P

Also, welcome to the thread, MacNasty. Interesting name you've got there. The quarians if I remember correctly have a specific naming system. I only remember the meaning of these ones.
  • vas [ship-name] — crew of
  • nar [ship-name] — child of
As for Kal'Reeger, he is sort of a special case. Or maybe they just never mention his ship name like they don't for Admiral Xen and so on.

A nickname I have at my school... Couldn't think of any other username:devil:

I remember that, because they changed Tali's after her pilgrimage right? And thanks, I was beginning to think he was a special case. Well now to think of names... A rather annoying part, with aliens sometimes.

I think the writers slipped up on the Quarian names because I can't think of any reason why any Quarian would be introduced without the ship name. I think indicating where they are from is very important to them, especially since I believe they developed this form of address as a reminder of what they had lost.

The only Quarians without a ship name are those who are exiled.

Welcome to the thread, Good Sir MacNasty!

I am always happy to see another writer join us, and gleefully look forward to adding another fic to the extensive list I've compiled to read. There are many great writers here, and it's always nice to add more.

And in a shameless plug for my own work, I just want to add that Chapter 2 of ME: Event Horizon is now online.

Drussius! Only five days since you've published your story and you're already shamelessly promoting yourself.

I like it.

Anyways, I'll read over the chapter within 24 hours. Are you forming pairings yet?

LOL. I was actually hoping to have it up after three days. But I spent two combing over the first five chapters and rewording extensively. Hopefully there will be far fewer grammatical errors and clumsy wording this time.

As for the question... No comment! Posted Image

PS: Seriously, nobody else is WORTHY of pairing up with ANY of the LI's except Shep.  In some characters' cases, this is really depressing for them.

This is actually a semi-problem not with just the LIs but the rest of the cast… realistically speaking, out of the crew of 30-40 people, there would be maybe 3-4 pairs that would end up more than temporary stress relief.

On one hand, people prefer to see pairings of familiar characters…but that gets silly at some point. So, on the other, you’re left with three other options for each character that you write:

– Don’t write any romantic involvement. Especially for a post-fic, this may be emotionally unsatisfying.

– Refer to a relationship obliquely, purposely leaving the partner outside happenings in the inner circle. This is hard to do with the correct balance of establishing there is a relationship, but not really exploring it.

– Make an OC out of the partner, and bring them in in some capacity. Either a ‘guest star’ part with occasional run-ins, or properly as part of the crew.

That’s the correct nomenclature. You’re nar until you’ve done your pilgrimage, and been assigned to your first ship…in fact, it seems that the full true name might be the totality of all nars and vas’s :)

I’ve got Kal as Neema crew, so Kal’Reegar vas Neema; Tali embraced what was intended as a slight, so she’s now Tali’Zorah vas Normandy.

If you go with the ‘personal history’ name, then it’d be something like Tali’Zorah vas Normandy vas Neema nar Rayya.

Also, there’s one subtlety to the naming…Tali is referred to as Tali, but I keep seeing the insistence to use the full name of others where it’s not really needed (in my opinion). I have some Kal’Reegar POVs, and just like everyone else, he’s only referred to as Kal in those.

I was also thinking about the implications of Rannoch, but I’ll have to leave that for a later possible reveal :)

Right! Finally caught up on the thread! Went away for a couple of days and had about twenty pages to catch up on.

Quarian Naming is fairly simple. It goes : Given name ' Clan name Vas Ship Name Nar Ship Name.
Vas= The ship that The Quarian is currently serving on (post pilgrimage)
Nar= Birth ship.
E.G. When Tali goes to the fleet for her trial, she identifies herself as 'Tali'Zorah Vas Neema Nar Rayya', indicating that they keep their birth ship in their official name. However the scene implies that this is a very formal introduction.
On a similar note, I reckon the 'Vas (Ship Name)' portion of the name is similarly formal, just to a lesser extent than including both Nar and Vas portions.

We probably never learn Kal's ship names because we meet him in the heat of battle and after that we're always with Tali when we speak to him, and the pair share a certain informality.

In short, I reckon it works like this:
Tali'Zorah Vas Neema Nar Rayya/ Vas Normandy Nar Rayya: Very formal introductions, identifying herself to be allowed on the fleet, filling in space tax forms etc. (Possible Human equivalent: Richard Wexworth the Third of Oxford)
Tali'Zorah Vas Neema/ Vas Normandy: Slightly more relaxed introductions, who she has her mail sent to, stuff like that. (Possible Human equivalent: Richard Wexworth the Third)
Tali'Zorah: Introduction among friends/ more casual setting (Human equivalent: Richard Wexworth)
Tali: Close friends. Even Kal doesn't refer to her as just Tali, if I recall correctly. Just the Normandy crew and Shala and Han, both old friends. (Human equivalent: Richard/Dick)

Kal and Veetor are the only Quarians we meet that we don't learn the ship names of. I mean, we get:
Daro'Xen Vas Moreh
Han'Gerrel Vas Neema
Shala'Raan Vas Tonbay
Zaal'Koris Vas Qwib-Qwib
Rael'Zorah Vas Rayya/ Possibly changed to Vas Alarei

I pulled that off the top of my head far too quickly to be healthy. The Nerd is strong with this one.

Anyway, the general gist is: how formal do you want to be with your form of address?

@ Lill: there's one thing to think about, actually. Do Quarians keep the entire history of their names?

Like, is Tali Tali'Zorah Vas Normandy Vas Neema Nar Rayya, or just Tali'Zorah Vas Normandy Nar Rayya?
I think it makes more sense for them to just be 'Name- Current ship name- Birth ship name'

Hmm... so they did mention the ship name of Admiral Xen. Whoops.

I'd have to agree with fain. If quarians kept the entire history of their names, it would get pretty lengthy if quarians don't switch around ships all that much once they get accepted onto one.

I'm somewhat puzzled by the effects of varius ammo/biotics. In Chapter 2, one of the Batarians was described as having been hit by what I presume, a biotic effect that freeze the target.

My take on Incendiery is that the target gets burnt, on the surface. What about cryo? I don't think it froze the internal organs? Frozen targets always explode when hit because it's a game but I'm not sure how that would translate into a story?

Mass Effect: Refusal

I can give some obivous critque: nothing happens. You should write and bundle up more content in a chapter, even if that means you have to release less often. All three chapters so far could be have been put into a single chapter. I feel that thousand word chapters are just too short, so you should aim at making your chapters longer before releasing them.

I've read all three chapters so far, and to me, I don't find it interesting, which is a major flaw. The opening should capture a reader's interest, make them want to read more. So far, all you seem to have given is 3 chapters of a maybe ok Miri/Shepard romance and some dialog on how they appoaching Omega.

I think you could this could use some certain improvement. Remember to give us just an idea of where this story is going, and a reason to read. So far, it's quite uneventful.

Okay. I didn't want to rush into this. I especially didn't want the start to be 'explosions evrywhere'. I kind of wanted it to be slow. This story isn't meant to be an epic tale. It is simply meant to fill in the gaps between ME2 and ME3, which is, other than arrival, pretty dull.
However I understand and I will try to add further excitment. I have plans involving gangs, cerberus and the stupid council as well as Arrival etc. So hopefully things will look up. Thanks, for taking your time to read and review it. =)

So  Mass Effect is not  being very helpful  with my Muse's right  now... I need the exact dimensions of the Normandy  SR-2   and guess what... Bioware did not come up with them.

It’s about 130% of SR-1

Edit: you could try to estimate it from the ending cinematics, I suppose… how exact do you need to be?

Edit2: based on the size of the front wing/whatever, I’d mark the front width about 10 meters, making the ship’s length about 70 meters, and widest point (minus wings) around 25 meters. Height about 20 meters.

I don’t think they move ships all that much as a rule. I would tend that they retain the entire history—but that’s excessively formal. Even vas-nar is something used only in highly formal situations. Including all ship names would be something akin to a CV.

I certainly wouldn’t feel either convention to be out of place (so long as otherwise appropriately used, of course).

That's quite an overload on the poor guy, lillitheris. Posted Image I don't think he has a baseline to work with.

@nitefyre410, maybe you could just take a leaf out of contemporray navy frigates? BW's aptitude is churning out stories, not technical specs of spaceships. You can only find those for SF tv series.

Example: the Earth Alliance Starfury. (B5)

Length : 9.56 m
Mass 48 metric tons
Acceleration 1 km/s^2
Powersource : 3 Fusion Batteries

Weaponsystem
4 40 mm Pulse Cannons
2 35 mm Pulse Cannons
Fusion missiles

Defensesystem
4.2 cm re-enforced armor
1 Grappling Claw
1 Cutting Laser

There's even info on EA cruisers, etc.

Posted Image

P.S. I think I ran into a forum where a group was discussin role-playing as crew of a ME Alliance frigate and they were trying to figure out the specs for it, along with crew compositions. But then, they had to make it up because there is no information on frigates that's not the Normandy class.

Yeah I have noticed doesn't Bioware realize that half the fun of a nice fleshed out sci-fi  universe, I found a thread where some guestamatied that it was SR-2 was  3x the length of the latest  Airbus jumbo jet... that came out to about over 600m. That seemed a little too big  so I was doing come more cross reference just be sure.

I might check some naval ships next... thanks for pointing me in a good direction.

It gets stuck, then freezes the surface around it. Very painful if it meets skin, cells are severely damaged, leaving huge gaping, freely bleeding wounds. Armor surface suffers structural damage and is bound to crack open on further impact. Highly frowned upon weapon mod.

:D Something like that?

Let me repost this from above:

Based on the size of the front wing that juts out in relation to Joker, I’d mark the front
width about 10 meters, making the ship’s length about 70 meters, and
widest point (minus wings) around 25 meters. Height about 20 meters.

Definitely not longer than 100 meters, I think the 70-80 is probably pretty close.

Okay I have finished Chapter 4. It should hopefully hook some of you in, and it leaves with a cliffhanger. I will not start writing Chapter 5 till tomorrow as I want to see the response first. Any feedback will be much appreciated.
Link is in my signature, I believe. =)
