I can't speak for anyone but myself, but for me it was rather evident that was what it was supposed to be before I watched the show (Got that feeling from the books). And Tyrion... Maybe he has a dwarf accent?:D

Yeah, the other guy was a big fan of the books and apparently The Wall was based on Hadrian's Wall...which means most of the wildlings should be Scottish? :P

I guess Tyrion's supposed to be charming, and that's why he sounds a lot like James Mason.

Cheers for the tips, guys! Some good food for thought there. Originally, I think I had the scene mapped out fairly well but I think I want to go 'deeper', which means a lot more effort, obviously. Definitely needs a bit before the two actually meet as well, I think.

I had the exact experience - the need to go "deeper". I originally had 11 chapters done covering the entire ME1, but when I actually put the story down on paper (computer), the original scenes and ideas keep expanding and getting "deeper". Now, 14 chapters later, I'm not even half way there yet.

Please don't hold back! I want to see some extra thoughts from your Miranda! She feels real to me.

Another big distraction coming tonight: The Olympics!

Good show. I definitely think if you're covering the main story, it's always good to act a bit of extra detail. Same with covering a song... :P

And cheers for the comment. Wow. That means a lot. Thank you! :)

Ended up making a compromise on my dilemma of publishing given the summer slump, and just made a short transitional chapter rather than skipping altogether. I guess this works.

I suspect I’m going to be having lots of Olympics as background noise, too…

Welcome! I'm not the best to give advice (I get distracted easily, I've been writing this prologue for a bit too long.) But I'll give you some advice that I can:D

1. Try not to get distracted. Once it starts... It's a bit hard to stop.
2. Try to avoid run-on sentences. They can be a bit hard, but if you look at it hard enough, you can usually find a better way to split it up into two smaller sentences.
3. Try to come up with a full plot before you start... I still don't have one:pinched: Or at least, not the majority fo wha's going to happen.

Other than that... WRITE!

Well, most of my advice is pretty simple.
-Spend time thinking up a concept for the story. Once you get it, think some more on how to potentially flesh it out. Give yourself some options, but never let them restrict you from doing other things with it once you get the ball rolling.
-Know your characters. At least on a foundational level. Think of them as people. If you know them as an acquaintance, that's probably good enough to start with at a basic level. I personally prefer to build the characters' lives in my head before anything else, but anywhere in between both examples is fine. Just...get to know your characters. Ask questions about them, like what they're afraid of, what their favourite colour/food/city/scent/drink/etc. is, what family they had, what relationship did they have with their family, etc. etc. Basic character building exercises. Don't jump to cliches on major characters, it usually only results in failure (in my eyes, at least).
-Write about things you find fun. Practice the other parts to get yourself well rounded, but mostly focus on what's fun to write.
-Don't worry too much about making mistakes early on. You learn as you go.
-Use punctuation. It's important. Use commas and, when necessary, semi-colons. They'll make your writing a lot easier to read.
-Don't worry about word-count. Finish chapters where you feel comfortable.

Can't think of much else that isn't blatantly obvious, or specifically geared to certain types of writers, so....yeah!

Have fun! And welcome to the thread!:wizard:

Trust me, I know the feeling. I really, really do... But having a basic idea of what you're going to do for at least some portion of the story helps. Now if it works, I'm not saying...:alien:

It's important to make a number of decisions on your story before you start and hit that publish button. I've had one in the making for a month now, and only yesterday have I decided that I want to add an entirely new section onto the prologue that's already 10'000 words long. I'm still mulling over the story on that one, but I want to know what I'm doing for the entire length of the story before I even go to publish onto FanFic Net.

As a Fan-Fic Writer, it's not like you have deadlines (Actually I have. I need to finish off one of my stories to chapter 40 by November before the official sequel comes out and dries up all interest in my story. Three chapters to go and four months, so I guess I'll be fine)

Best advice: Have multiple projects, but not too many! A good number is two, so that if you get board with one, you can update the other. Three if your dedicated or simply indecisive like me (Three Fan Fiction projects. One Halo Fic, my Mass Effect: Deception rewrite, and my own ME Fic in the works plus a Mod project I'm creating levels for.)

I'm a writer who writes without a completely set in stone plot. I agree it has its ups and downs, but I say plans are hard to follow. By writing spur of the moment, I'm challenged to direct the story as it evolves.

I'm sure this has created some utterly terrible decisions in the past, but for my top Fic (Twenty Nine, Seventy One), it has allowed me to direct the story where my readers wish. I originally wanted to make a number of decisions that would shift the focus of the story , but I had actually questioned a few subscribers through PM's about what they enjoyed about the story, and actually found that they found they loved the existing plot setup, so I kept it.
Though if you've read TNSO on Fan Fiction Net, you know the name I gave the ship is damn awful because I didn't expect it to last so long.... I eventually dropped half the name when referring to it.

You may come to a revelation while writing that your story isn't strong enough. I found that my plot required a character to go completely out of it, to advance the plot, so I adapted and rewrote it. I even changed the outright ending of the story after the ME3 controversy, seeing Bioware's short comings and coming to the decision that a potagonist should never have to make a deal with the antagonist.

^ Yup. In my case, I’ve gone even slightly more extreme, and only really plotted out the starting situation, and a potential place where I’d like to end it. This gives certain avenues through which the various things can progress somewhat organically.

Another tip on writing Fan Fiction: listening to what your writing about's Soundtrack is a really great way to get yourself in the mood for writing about it, as well as inspiring you.

I'm currently writing more TNSO; Chapter Thirty Seven now, and I find that listening to the excellent Sacred Icon Suite has really got me inspired to write further.

I had a beginning and a few places where I wanted my story to go. I also had an end in mind. I have found that while writing thing tend to go off side quickly and in directions you never thought of. Pretty much every scene I have with this one character Lissa, never goes the way I planned it, but it works better.

I would have to look it up but I am sure I saw an interview once where Uma Thurman and Tarantino created the character The Bride together and from that character he created Kill Bill.

Everyone does it differently, you need to find the way you want to do. What you want to focus on. We can give you advise but you need to make it your way.

Oh jeez. -_-  It's in the works, I've just had a busy and rather unpleasant week. I'm about 2k words in and I know what I need to write, I just haven't had much time lately. Been shuttled around a lot lately, usually visiting my ailing grandma, and when I haven't been traveling, I've been (unintentionally) strung along by some people with good intentions but incredibly poor organizational and planning skills(or sometimes  some people have just forgotten previously made plans). So it's been a frustrating and fairly depressing week. Would have been more productive if I had a laptop, or a vehicle of my own so I wouldn't be left to the mercy of the city's bus system.

But the next chapter should be soon. I can't promise it'll be this weekend, because frankly, I'm not sure what the heck's going on this weekend that might involve me, but if not this weekend, soon afterward.

I set out major plot points and just let the characters take it from there. I usually have ideas about what to do, but those can be cut in favour of something else I think up along the way. :)

You’re excused just this once, fluffy. But, you know, seriously don’t worry about it.

(Although of course I’m way behind reading so it doesn’t affect me anyway. NIMBY etc. :)

I'd wait forever Fluffy, all that and you just finished a very hard chapter. The longer the wait the greater the anticipation. Theres a new chapter for Uncommon Bonds today, that should tide me over for a bit

Pondering on taking a week’s break…I’d like to publish the next chapter on Sunday (not really sure why, but whatever), but I don’t think I’m going to make it in time for tomorrow…so either I’ll push back a week, or then just publish during the week.

Dilemmas.

Ah man, I did that for two of my initial fanfics.  I think I was so amped up to start writing, I only created a beginning, roughly thought of an end, and just let the characters dictate how the story went.

An interesting excercise, if you can keep the world and it's denizens in your mind at all times.  Still, not something I'd relish repeating with abandon.

lillitheris : Don't feel too bad.  I dunno how many times I've gone to bed without writing ANYTHING simply b/c of distractions.  Part of the offense with my present project is not knowing how I want the BEGINNING to flow, as I am torn between a few choices.  As such, I'm keeping it vague, and probably won't even start POSTING until well near the finish.

The problem with the "just write and see how it works" concept is that I have now so many loose ends I'm starting to loose track of them. It is really annoying rereading the last four or five chapters to prevent to mess up my howl storyline.
But on the other hand thats the challange which keeps me in. And it keeps me at bay so I dont screw up like making my OC something like Superman.

@Seracen. How do you do that? I think i would go crazy with your method. Write, reread, write, reread, write and at some point scratch it and wirte it again. I would say just writing the story and see is way better ..

Right now I keep fantasing about my ending. But that is so far boyend it is a litle disappointing. I hope I dont forget those good ideas :D
