How come whenever I have someone volunteer to beta read for me, they magically disappear? ;_;

I just finished my chapter, but I still have no beta readers to take a look at it. :(

I would look at it but my grammar sucks and I am sure there are much more talented writers than I to help

Well...I found a few. One of them is missing (persumably on vacation), the others just didn't respond to me yet after volunteering to take a look at them.

I know I seem whiny but I'm just really anxious.

I can probably read a chapter tonight if you're still looking.

Q - does anyone know what is deuterium? Is it solid or gas? I tried looking in the category of minerals in MEWiki but it's not listed. However it is mentioned to be an element for drive cores.

Can I assume it's solid?

"Deuterium, also called heavy hydrogen, is one of two stable isotopes of hydrogen. It has a natural abundance in Earth's oceans of about one atom in 6,420 of hydrogen (~156.25 ppm on an atom basis). Deuterium accounts for approximately 0.0156 percent (or on a mass basis: 0.0312 percent) of all the naturally occurring hydrogen in the oceans, while the most common isotope (hydrogen-1 or protium) accounts for more than 99.98 percent. The abundance of deuterium changes slightly from one kind of natural water to another (see VSMOW)."

As stolen from Wikipedia. I'm fairly sure it's a gas.

Ok, obviously I'm looking into the wrong wiki. Posted Image  If they had just stated it as part of hydrogen, it would have been clearer right from the onstart.

Thanks for the info, Icyflare. Posted Image

This is nit-picky, but it's not "a part of hydrogen".  It IS hydrogen- an isotope, specifically one where the atom contains one proton and one neutron (as opposed to hydrogen's more common configuration of one proton only).  It's used in nuclear reactors among other things and is frequently used as part of hypothetical futuristic rocket fuel in science fiction.

I think a lot of people fall into my camp on betas. I would love to do it, but I have very little free time, family obligations, a story I'm trying to write in what free time I do have, and I don't want to be the guy that says "Sure, I'll do it!" and then has nothing but excuses for the weeks that follow. Plus the very real possibility that in a couple more weeks, I won't be around at all to help out.

But isn't there a "Search for Betas" section on FF.net? I thought I saw something like that, but never actually tried it.

It could be a gas, a fluid, or a solid…depends on the temperature/pressure :)

I can’t really promise I could beta-read for anyone either, in any timely fashion.  The pool of potentials is fairly small…editing isn’t usually seen as a particularly glamorous undertaking, as important as it is.

I don't particularly like the "Search for Betas" section on FFnet. It's a bit overwhelming to go through hundreds of beta readers that are only separated by language, rating, and type categories, and nothing else. It's also a lot of trial and error to go through beta readers to look for one whose beta-reading style matches what you want/need from a second pair of eyes.

Maybe if you give me more information about the length and type of story it is, I might be able to help. It would also be nice if you let it be known when you want the beta-reading finished by. I'm have some busy days lined up myself.

Alright, my beta reader (with the help of a few other readers) have finally helped me out. And I have uploaded my new chapter.

Heritage

This is my second longest chapter in my story. I think it was chapter 5 that had over 5,000 words or something. Or close to it. This one pushed passed the 4,500 mark.

Hope you all enjoy it!

Guys, quick question,

Do you find your tainted because of Mass effectn and the awesome world and characters and great voice acting and everything that made Mass Effect great.

I am so tainted that finding any other video game has been imposible. Im looking forward to the rebooted TOmb Raider but it's sic months away.

I mean there just is no other game I can get into. I drive the guys at EB ganes insane in my constant search. Ive tried Sky rim, character creation turned me off. I tried Risen two, graphic and voice acting turned me off. I tried Dues Ex which I dont really care about the main character. Ive tried Witcher just cant get into it. Bioshock series was bleh.

I want something where I can create my character (A strong female lead cause, well just cause) have a couple companions and go adventure and I have great choices and the voice acting is good... I want a bioware game... they need to come out with them in one shape or form at least once a year. I guess this is why I turned to writing cause I just can not find anything. My husband is ready to throttle me cause Im driving him insane.

I guess until Dragon Age 3 comes out or some new stuff (Omega DLC maybe) comes out Ill just be mopping around my house miserably

Yes. But admittedly I don’t play that much to begin with. I have the same problem with games as I do with books: I find it really  hard to start new ones, but can get quite into them when I do.

The Witchers are great (when you get rid of the ridiculous bloom filter in 2, anyway). Skyrim is nice, but the story isn’t particularly immersive. I spent far more of my time with Wars in Skyrim, Warzones, and writing my own ENB config…

Maybe you should try one of the older games, especially if you’re a youngling ^_^ Baldur’s Gates, Neverwinter Nights…

Hrm. Well, I'm a sucker for good narratives in any game, so I've (in the past year) also played Deus Ex:HR a few times (I've loved the Deus Ex series since launch, it's such a wonderful series, even that mediocre second game with the horrific PC port) and The Witcher 2. However, I couldn't really get into Geralt like I could Adam Jensen, but they're both games I've enjoyed.

However, they're not my own characters, I don't have agency in them. I control what they do and where they go, but they're foreign from me. That's why games like Dragon Age and Mass Effect appeal to me (and why I was worried when Bioware got such backlash, because they're the only ones to make these kinds of games). I can be more immersed in the world. Even with Dragon Age 2 being incredibly unfinished, I found hours of enjoyment.

I don't think Mass Effect has ruined other games for me, but I'm past the stage of my life where I'm going for high scores, or the fastest time trial, or anything competitive. I find myself returning to good stories and characters. I loved Bioshock (the original one, not the sequel, at all), I think I'm the only one of my friends who found the ending was amazing...but I'm weird like that I guess (I also found the ending of DX:HR to be among the best I've witnessed, so...it's pretty obvious what I find compelling). The game was a bit easy for my liking, but whatever. I occasionally keep wanting to return to System Shock and System Shock 2 (vastly superior games), but they refuse to run on my PC.

But yeah, aside from Deus Ex and Mass Effect(the series), I haven't really touched much else. Hasn't ruined games for me, like I said, it's just clued me in to what I generally focus on most. Less time wasted now.

Good question lol

Thus far I've learned to watch the first chapter and that anytime someone hits back or next on a chapter it counts it as a 'view', etc.

Honestly I dont care what the numbers mean or what they count for or anything. It just makes me feel good knowing someone is reading and hopefully enjoying what I wrote, because I enjoyed writing it
